The Sacramento Kings’ dismissal of Mike Brown remains a huge mystery.
Although it seems that they are now working well under the new mentorship of Doug Christie, the Kings won’t still escape questions surrounding their controversial decision of relieving Brown out of his head coaching duties.
Brown — who led the franchise out of its miserable 16-year playoff drought by making it to the 2023 postseason — was shockingly dismissed last December after the team’s poor 13-18 start. And the removal instantly sparked backlash across the NBA and most notably around head coaches starring Denver Nuggets’ Michael Malone.
It all starts at the top
While many pinpoint and perceive De’Aaron Fox as the main reason for Brown’s exit, DeMarcus Cousins meanwhile identifies the team’s leadership as the one who should be held accountable for all the mess that has occurred for the entire organization.
“History repeats itself. I’ve seen the story before. It’s the same blame game. It’s always the next guy. It was me at one point. It is always the next guy’s fault. Like it starts at the top, got to find some stability,” Cousins said in the recent segment of Run It Back.
“I don’t even want to sit here and try to count all the coaches, but it’s been a lot of coaches. It’s no stability. It’s no direction. It’s a constant blame game, it starts at the top. The top has to get it together.”
Cousins’s argument speaks volume considering that he’s the former franchise star of the Kings. For seven seasons, he himself fully witnessed the full mediocrity and lowly management of the team.
As it is, Cousins is particularly referring to Vivek Ranadive as the one behind the Kings’ ups and downs throughout the years. Since being at the helm as Sacramento’s chairman in 2013, the Kings have undergone controversial moves and decision-making in the midst of dysfunctionality.
Under Ranadive, the Kings hired seven head coaches in the last 12 years and only achieved one winning season courtesy of Brown.
Accountability and better people around
With how situations have gone already for Sacramento yet again upon the firing of Brown which has been generally unwanted by all people within the organization, Cousins simply desires key few things from them especially for Ranadive: accountability and a new brain trust.
The Kings are currently standing on a desperate spot to try to maintain their competitive fight and reputation in the NBA. As such, Cousins is convinced that it will all start towards Ranadive knowing his responsibilities and limitations.
“It’s time for some new advisors, something. Get some new friends, get some some people that are smarter than you, or you feel the smarter than you, to help you make these decisions,” Cousins added.
“But it’s just time to really focus on where the blame is and that’s at the top.”
