The Sacramento Kings’ change in fortunes in the last few weeks has been monumental, and their great run continued against the Miami Heat.
Now on a five-game unbeaten run, following a 123-118 double-overtime victory against the Heat, the atmosphere around the team has changed markedly.
The victory was made even more impressive considering the absence of star De’Aaron Fox whose future with the Kings continues to be questioned.
DeMar DeRozan appears to have found his groove under the new Interim Head Coach, Doug Christie, following Mike Brown’s sacking.
DeRozan recently explained how the team could have to resort to lining up ’15 cans of energy drink’ before games, which looks well in the rearview now.
It was DeRozan himself who would stand up and be counted in a slog against the Heat, he even managed to secure a personal accolade along the way.
DeRozan’s clutch overtime display
The game looked well and truly in the hands of the Heat as they built a 17-point fourth-quarter lead, only to blow it in double overtime.
Strong displays from Tyler Herro, who is quickly becoming the star in Miami, Bam Adebayo and Jaime Jaquez Jr., who dropped a triple-double, looked to have given the Heat a much-needed win following the Jimmy Butler trade noise.
However, DeRozan had other plans and finished the game with 30 points, nine of which came during the overtime period.
DeRozan shared with the media how he ‘loves’ being responsible with the ball in important moments down the stretch saying: “I love it, I’ve been in so many of those situations throughout my career. You thrive it in, you can’t be scared to fail.
“You live for those moments so for me it’s to be calm and I try to relish in those moments as much as I can.”
DeRozan was on the court for a staggering 47 minutes making 12-26 from field goal range.
DeRozan chasing overtime points record
While DeRozan’s clutch performance helped the Kings to yet another success it also helped him to another personal career milestone.
With his nine overtime points, he ties Russell Westbrook for the second most overtime points among active players. Deebo has now scored 326 career OT points. The King, LeBron James leads the way.
It also puts him second to Denver’s Nikola Jokic for the most overtime points this season.
