Well now, that was fun. Anna Nagase (of Summertime Render) voices animation director Hirose Natsuko, made famous by her tv anime debut, Sukeban Magical Girl Dark Academy. But now she’s been tasked with directing a romantic comedy, and has artist’s block. Like Oshi no Ko Season 2’s Abiko, she’s also a perfectionist and bad at delegating. When shown a batch of new drawings, she quickly looks them over and marks the envelope with the word “Zenshuu”—“Fix All.”
But while looking at mentions of her on social media and thinking about a formative anime film from her childhood, A Tale of Perishing, Natsuko carelessly eats a clam from a bento that’s way past it’s expiration date. Let this be a lesson to handlers of artists like Natsuko: provide them with shelf stable food! Natsuko appears to die, then wakes up in a strange desert and is attacked by an monstrous insectoid beast. She’s rescued by the human hero Luke Braveheart, the SD unicorn Unio, the Mayanesque robotic statuette QJ, and the elf Memmeln.
It doesn’t take long for Natsuko to realize that she’s in the world of A Tale of Vanishing. Once she arrives in the Last Town, she’s able to recite a celebratory speech verbatim. She also knows that this party for Luke and his friends will soon be interrupted by a massive Void army (Void is the name given to monsters such as the one that attacked her). But Luke and the others don’t listen; because Natsuko hides her face in her hair and has a strange name and clothes, they assume she’s some kind of untrustworthy gremlin.
When the Void army arrives, it’s so large it covers the horizon. Natsuko knows Unio will sacrifice himself to save Luke and the others, throwing Luke into despair, but doesn’t think she can change the story that, to that point, has gone by just as it did in the movie. That is, until the pegbar in her hoodie starts glowing and talking to her. It urges her to draw, and after a gorgeous magical girl-like transformation sequence that also reveals her face, Natsuko’s fully-equipped animator’s desk appears right there in the sand. This was the evocative promo image that had me marking this as a show to watch.
As Unio chants the incantation for his self-destruct spell, Natsuko gets to drawing, at lightning speed. She doesn’t just make one drawing, either, but a sequence of drawings that together form an animation. And what do you know, she draws one of the God Warriors from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (which were animated by young Anno Hideaki)…only it shoots beams out of its eyes instead of its mouth! Its one of many visual and thematic homages to the 1984 pre-Ghibli Miyazaki film, along with the post-apocalyptic setting, wardrobe, and monolithic threat (an army of Voids instead of Ohmu).
The God Warrior’s eye beams destroy every last Void before Unio can complete his incantation. While Unio at first thinks he somehow won the day, Luke, Memmeln and QJ witnessed Natsuko’s bizarre power. She tells them she’s an “animator” from “reality”, and they take that to mean she’s an Anneemator from “a kingdom called Reality.” It’s a great opening salvo that actually feels like a fresh stab at the done-to-death isekai genre, while also referencing one of my all-time favorite films. And MAPPA makes it look and sound great throughout. I’m in!
