NBA veteran Draymond Green had a surprisingly strong take when he was asked about Victor Wembanyama.
The NBA has a new generational talent in it’s midst, with Victor Wembanyama developing into a truly special player.
Former NBA star DaMarcus Cousins said this week Wembanyama will at ‘minimum’ be the greatest defensive player of all time, and could go on to achieve a lot more.
There is one compliment current Warriors star Draymond Green takes clear exception to, however, a comparison to his Golden State teammate Stephen Curry.
Steph Curry one of a kind
Warriors star Draymond Green was asked whether Victor Wembanyama could have the transformative impact on the NBA that Curry has had over the past decade.
The San Antonio Spurs center is a truly unique player – but Green believes he is not comparable to Curry.
Green told his podcast: “‘Hell no, there’s zero per cent chance Wemby’s impact can be the same as even remotely close to Steph, and here’s why.
“Wemby is as special of a player as we’ve seen coming probably and possibly in the history of the NBA.
“And that’s why he can’t have an impact, because you just can’t be 7 6″ or 7 5″ or whatever, being relatable.”
Green elaborated that Curry is so popular because he does not stand out as an athletic freak – even though he plays in a way nobody else can.
He said: “One of the reasons Steph has had such a large impact on the game that he had is because he looked like he’s everybody’s size.
“Everybody think ‘I can be Steph, I can do that regardless of how athletic I am. I can learn to shoot the ball. And if I can shoot the lights out the ball, and I can run all day, and I can work on my handle, I can be Steph.’
“The reality is where they fail to realize is, no, you can’t, because his shot is like God given, with a God given work ethic.”
Wembanyama leading new generation
Victor Wembanyama is in his second season in the NBA and he is taking the step forward in his on-court production that was predicted ahead of the season.
The Spurs star is destined for a big future, whether comparable to Stephen Curry or not, he is blazing his own trail.
Wembanyama has helped the Spurs to a more respectable record this season, and the team’s front office has to continue to build the team around him as he gains experience.
Curry is towards the end of his career, a long and distinguished run with one franchise where he has won four NBA titles. That is the kind of record Spurs fans would settle for when Wembanyama is one day ready to wind down.
