Becky Hammon seems to think that Bradley Beal can find success off the bench in Phoenix and cited an example of what that might look like.
On Monday, the Phoenix Suns made a peculiar roster decision ahead of their matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers. Their “Big Three” of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal has not lived up to their billing so far this season, evidenced by Phoenix’s 16-18 record.
In an effort to find a lineup or rotation that works, the Suns had Beal come off the bench for the first time since 2016. Beal recorded 25 points off the bench and the Suns, critically, got the win.
Going into the game, the Suns had the seventh-lowest scoring bench and the tenth-worst offensive rating of any second unit in the league. Sending Beal to the bench, despite his massive $50.2 million salary, seems to have paid off.
Why did the Suns relegate their third-best player to the second unit?
Durant, Booker, and Beal were supposed to be able to compete with the very best teams in the NBA, but the Suns are currently only one spot ahead of the tanking Portland Trail Blazers in the standings.
There has been some chatter that Beal was moved to the bench in order to get him to waive his no-trade clause, but he has made it clear that his list of preferred trade destinations is limited, which severely hurts the Suns’ options.
Regardless of the reasoning behind it, the Suns clearly have found a recipe for success, and Beal should be expected to come off the bench in coming games. The Suns are scheduled to play the Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, and Utah Jazz in their next three games. None of those teams are particularly excellent, making for a ripe opportunity to experiment.
In the modern NBA, players rarely make such sacrifices for their teams, but if the Suns want to win, they should follow the mold of one of the best franchises ever and ask one of their top players to play an unconventional role.

Becky Hammon compared Beal to Manu Ginobili
Becky Hammon, before she won two WNBA titles as the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces, was a top assistant on Gregg Popovich’s staff for the San Antonio Spurs. Her coaching career overlapped Manu Ginobili’s playing career by four seasons, and the greatest sixth man in NBA history left quite an impression.
On ESPN on Tuesday, Hammon outlined how she thinks Beal’s move to the bench can be a positive.
“I’m going to go to my favorite bench player, Manu Ginobili. There was a point where Pop had to go to him and say, ‘Hey, I got to move you to the bench because it’s what’s best for our team,’” Hammon outlined.
“Manu’s a Hall of Famer. Like, you can get to where you want to go and at the end of the day, the success is what matters and more importantly, when you have some of these individual successes and the team success comes along with that, I think you get a great winning recipe, but he kind of always seems the odd man out.
“They talk about Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, when you’re Bradley Beal that stings. That stings, especially when you’ve had as much success as he’s had as a player.”
Hammon went on to offer Beal “kudos” and commend him for “being a pro” who is willing to take a back seat if it means winning.
The Suns’ head coach, Mike Budenholzer, coached Ginobili for 11 seasons, winning three titles together. If the Suns want to right the ship, following Popovich’s example is a good place to start.
