The electric vehicle (EV) market in Malaysia is set for another increase in registrations in 2024, at least according to the latest data released by the road transport department (JPJ). In 2023, 10,159 EVs were sold, up from 2,631 units in 2022, while 2021 saw just 278 units registered.
While we wait for an official figure from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), JPJ’s latest vehicle registration data indicates 2024’s EV tally exceeds what was recorded for 2023. Just combining the number of registrations of the top two best-selling EV brands here already exceeds 13,000 units, according to the data.
If you’re wondering, the top two brands are BYD and Tesla, with the former holding on to the top spot with 8,570 registrations. The Chinese brand currently has five EVs in its line-up, which is the three more than Tesla that came in second with 5,137 units – the American brand only offers the Model 3 and Model Y here.
What about other brands then? Well, BMW claimed the third spot with 1,975 units and is one of three brands to cross the 1,000-unit mark. MINI, which is part of the BMW Group, was relatively quiet in the first half of the year but the introduction of new generations of the all-electric Cooper and Countryman saw registrations pick up all the way to 637 units, good enough for fourth place.
Next comes Great Wall Motor in fifth with 615 units from its Ora EV sub-brand, while further down the list, smart secured the sixth spot with 603 units. The latter narrowly edged out MG which only saw consistent deliveries of its EVs from April onwards to end 2024 with 592 units.
In eighth place, Volvo registered 583 units to be ahead of Chery (553 units) and even Mercedes-Benz (496 units). Below the 500-unit mark is Porsche (405 units) in 11th place, followed by Xpeng which only saw registrations from July onwards to secure the 12th spot with 397 units.
We’re now at brands under the 300-unit mark, and they are Neta (271 units), Lotus (222 units), Hyundai (151 units), Maxus (110 units) and Audi (102 units). The final three brands making up the top 20 list are GAC (80 units), Zeekr (75 units) and Lexus (52 units).
