All-Star guard Darius Garland sent a bold proclamation for the Cleveland Cavaliers after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the collision of the NBA’s top two teams.
In the aftermath of their 129-122 big-time win, Garland didn’t hesitate to crown the Cavs as the current league’s best upon dismantling the Thunder.
“We’re relentless. Best team in the league,” Garland confidently said. “I don’t know, man, this team is great.
“This was a big win.”
Cavaliers prevailed in the clash of basketball titans
Wednesday night featured the best of the East and the West. Both the Cavs and the Thunder entered the compelling matchup as the only teams that have won over 30 games thus far this 2024-25 season.
And for Cleveland, it’s simply an opportunity for them to send a statement that they are a much superior group.
The Cavs’ recipe for success this season has been a strong collective attack, and this also served as their main component in outlasting the Thunder despite the slump of lead star Donovan Mitchell. Seven Cavaliers netted double-digit markers in which Garland poured 18 points and 7 dimes.
Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley — Cleveland’s imposing frontcourt towers — combined for 46 markers and 21 boards to completely punish Oklahoma City under the rim.
Meanwhile, the duo of Max Strus and Ty Jerome contributed 17 and 15 off the bench, respectively.
The battle was tightly contested as there were 30 lead changes and neither team pulled away with more than a nine-point margin. But embracing the energy and support of their raucous home crowd within the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the Cavaliers blew past Thunder in what could be an early preview of an NBA Finals matchup in June.
“It was a beautiful game,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said.
“I think it had a playoff atmosphere, playoff competition, guys were competing. I felt like there was no extracurricular stuff. It was just pure basketball, pure competition. I mean, obviously, whoever won, lost, it was just a good game for the league and for the fans.
“We all enjoy competition, but to see all that talent out there tonight, these were the heavy hitters of the league, and the quality of the basketball was super high.”
The Cavaliers belong
The Cavaliers are beaming with such pride and glory. With the major victory, they now extended their win streak to 11 at the cost of halting the Thunder’s 15-game win skid.
They are now parading a dominating 32-4 record that tops the Association — strongly positioning them to a 70-win campaign and be the first-ever team to clinch the historic feat since the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors.
As there’s still a relatively lack of attention for them from the current accomplishments and stellar team performance they’ve been demonstrating, Mitchell hopes that their marquee victory against the Thunder should be a clear message that they are here and ready to conquer.
“It’s very clear that we belong here,” he said. “I don’t think we are waiting for the national media to be like, ‘Oh, they belong.’ I think for us we knew, but you got to go out there and prove it.
“We went 31-4, people still don’t believe. We win tonight, people still don’t believe. We got to continue to just to be us.”
Cavaliers getting the big-time victory against the Thunder couldn’t be more significant, and this should certainly convince us that they do belong.
