There are few players in the NBA quite like Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks star is nicknamed the ‘Greek Freak’ due to his incredible athleticism, scoring ability and passion and drive that he plays with.
For many he is incomparable, due to his size and skillset, but there is one player on the Denver Nuggets who has some similar traits.
The player under discussion is 2017 MVP, Russell Westbrook, one of the best current players never to win a NBA Championship.
Russell Westbrook is a mini-Giannis
Russell Westbrook signed with the Denver Nuggets in July and after a couple of wobbly early games, he has established himself as a big part of the team’s offense.
Westbrook, 36, may no longer be at the stage of his career where he is averaging triple double, but he is still a force to be reckoned with.
Speaking to the Road Trippin’ podcast, former NBA player Channing Frye hailed Westbrook’s intensity and compared him to Giannis.
Frye said: “He is unrelenting. He is a mini athletic, I think he’s more athletic than Giannis, it’s crazy.
“He’s a mini-Giannis. He’s coming at you over and over and over and your just like, man stop, do you ever get tired?
“Every game, every minute. It is unbelievable. I respect that now that I’m a little bit older.”
Westbrook put up 19-6-8 in a big win for the Nuggets over the LA Clippers, winning 126-103 without Nikola Jokic.
What it is like to play against Russell Westbrook
Channing Frye went on to elaborate on the real challenge Russell Westbrook poses to a player when they go up against him.
He explained: “As a player who played [him], you had to get good sleep when you played Russell Westbrook.
“You were not eating outside your hotel, you are watching film, you are eating healthy, you are getting a massage, you have to be ready for 48 minutes of basketball, and honestly believe in what you are doing and believe in your team, or else Russell Westbrook would break you.”
Westbrook is still putting up historic numbers and adding to his legacy over the course of the current season.
And his big performances are asking questions of teams who have failed to make the most of him in recent seasons.
