Fifteen months after its first season wrapped, Kiyoka and Miyo seem to be doing fine. But Miyo is having strange dreams, and would very much like to know what they mean. Usuba Arata is there to support and guide her with her newly unsealed Dream-Sight, which makes for some awkward breakfasts.
One day while Kiyoka is accompanying Miyo and Hazuki on an interminable (for him) shopping trip, Kiyo senses she’s being watched, and before she knows it she’s meeting Kiyoka’s dad, Tadakiyo. He’s far more laid back than his son, and maybe he is…or is it an act? And while he’s ostensibly in town to meet Kiyoka’s new fiancée, he also has a grotesquerie case for him to investigate back in their hometown—one that comes from Crown Prince Takaihito himself.
Miyo accompanies Kiyoka on his trip back home, which essentially makes this episode the Meet the Parents of My Happy Marriage. Miyo, who’s rarely traveled, is in awe of the grand train station and soaks up the landscapes with gusto. We’re also reminded just how goddamn loaded the Kudou clan is, as they’re met at the station by the family butler Sasaki, who drives them the rest of the way by car.
But while the sights are lovely the vibes good, and the Kudou servants extremely coordinated, the moment Kiyoka’s mother Fuyu emerges from her lair, all bets are off. Fuyu knows full well the woman standing next to her son is his fiancée, but decides to be shitty right from the start and refer to Miyo as a plain, scruffy attendant. Kiyoka gets so mad he summons the lightning, and the house lights briefly go out. His dad, still in good spirits, has to break them up.
Kiyoka is mortified that Miyo had to endure such abuse, but that it’s par for the course with his mother. Miyo appreciates Kiyoka looking out for her, but she’s resolved to not only stand up for herself, but also get along with his mom and gain her acknowledgment.
It’s a tall task considering the woman she’s up against, but I know what Miyo is capable of, and she’s never been stronger or more confident, something she feels is thanks to Kiyoka showing him the warmth and light that family can provide, rather than the coldness and shadow she endured before meeting him.
While I wish Miyo vs. Fuyu is the only battle we’ll have to deal with in this arc, something calamitous is on the horizon. Crown Prince Takaihito has seen it, and sent Kiyoka home as a preemptive measure. The fate of the imperial city rests on whether the threat he’s foreseen can be defeated … and Miyo and her Dream-Sight will be a vital weapon in that fight.
