It’s a new low for Chinatsu x Taiki. The two never see or speak with one another, as Chinatsu is sequestered with her team at a hotel near the venue of the national final against the defending champs. The pressure on Chinatsu’s slender shoulders is compounded upon learning two of her treasured senpais will be retiring after this game, win or lose. It makes her roll up into a pill bug.
Taiki is the last one in the gym that day, which is closed early for maintenance. But when he finds a stray basketball, he decides to heave it up, and it clanks off the rim. Believing it to be bad luck to allow the miss to stand, he keeps trying, but despite keeping two on the ball he can’t get it in the cup. At least, not until he thinks about how cool Chinatsu is when she’s playing basketball. Just when he thinks about how that’s the Chinatsu he loves, he gets nothing but net, and is immediately embarrassed by the internal confession.
Taiki is also curious about how Hina fared in her national competition, and right on queue she shows up and she asks him to treat her to taiyaki and ice cream. She eventually nonchalantly informs him she finished third in the whole nation. While he thinks that’s awesome as hell, it’s not nearly good enough for her. She’s proud of her improvements, but won’t stop until she’s first. For now, though, she’s enjoying a much-deserved sugar rush.
The two end up in a playground, and Hina challenges Taiki to determine who can kick off their shoe the furthest. She then intentionally throws their match, only kicking her shoe about a foot before declaring that she is in love with him. Taiki isn’t sure what she’s saying at first, but unlike him in his head she isn’t the slightest bit embarrassed or hesitant, and makes it clear as an azure sky of deepest summer: she loves him, in a romantic way. That said, she also knows he likes Chinatsu, so he doesn’t have to answer her yet.
The confession hits Taiki like a ton of bricks, as he hadn’t suspected a thing until she told him, as a result of the all-too-common Chronic Protagonist Obliviousness Syndrome, or CPOS. As for Chinatsu? She misses the winning shot and Eimei High loses as the champions retain their title. Her ankle bracelet also breaks, and she can’t hold back the bitter tears of defeat and despair. Everything she’d been working towards is now in ruins.
We don’t see Taiki greet Chinatsu and offer condolences upon her return home, which is an odd choice. I guess he fell asleep or something? In any case, the next day he’s glad Hina doesn’t have practice in the gym, because he admits to himself he’d have trouble talking or even looking at the first person to ever confess their love to him.
But there Hina is, at the door of the gym. She toys with the flustered Taiki, reiterating her love for him and reveling in how it apparently makes his heart flutter. Little do they know as they enter the gym together that Chinatsu witnessed this flirting session, either partially or in full. I suspect she now believes now more than ever that Taiki and Hina are an item, and she’s on the outside looking in.
But I also know how shows like this work, so I’m not about to declare Hina—current Best Girl she may be—the victor quite yet. On the contrary: the fact she’s peaking so early in this second cour tells me she may have nowhere to go but down.
