The Memphis Grizzlies made one of the best selections in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Way down at the 39th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies may have landed the steal of the whole draft.
Their second round selection of Jaylen Wells out of Washington State is holding up as one of the best picks, certainly value wise.
Wells, a starter in the the Grizzlies’ narrow 127-125 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, earned widespread praise with his big performance.
The rookie scored 13 points, but his biggest impact came on defense, where he was able to contribute three steals, and shut down Anthony Edwards with a dominant man-to-man performance.
Edwards, the most prolific three-point shooter in the NBA, was restricted to only 15 points on the night, and Wells was a big part of that.
NBA fans rave over Jaylen Wells
NBA fans on social media had kind words to offer about Jaylen Wells’ performance in shutting down Edwards.
One wrote: “Jaylen Wells is the most impressive rookie in the NBA & not because of his scoring. Anthony Edwards was in hell tonight.”
A second added: “Jaylen Wells in another season or two is going to terrorize folks in their nightmares. He’s already a problem. He had Ant in purgatory.”
And a third wrote: “Jaylen Wells is doing so well guarding Anthony Edwards — not letting him have any daylight on offense, staying attached even through Gobert’s screens.”
These words were echoed by another, who raved: “Kudos to Jaylen Wells, he gave Ant problems the whole night! His defense was immaculate! I haven’t watched too many of the Grizzlies games but I like what I saw from the rookie tonight!”
Another fan wrote: “Jaylen Wells destroyed Anthony Edwards tonight. Best defender in this rookie class.”
And a sixth added: “Jaylen Wells, I’m impressed. Haven’t seen anyone do that to Ant-man for a LONG time.”
Jaylen Wells an effective two-way star
Jaylen Wells’ defense caught the eye with the way his close attention played a part in keeping Anthony Edwards quiet, a player who had admitted his dislike for seeing his space limited.
This was Edwards’ third lowest score in the NBA this season, and his lowest since facing the Victor Wembanyama-led San Antonio Spurs.
Jaylen Wells has shown an ability to contribute big at the other end of the court too – he scored 30 earlier this month against the Sacramento Kings, and he had 26 in an earlier game against the Bulls.
The win over Minnesota was a big win for the Grizzlies, who have come up short in big games against Western Conference rivals at times this season.
They rank third in the conference this season with a 25-14 record, and face the 25-12 Rockets up next, where Wells will need to turn up and deliver once again.
