Los Angeles Lakers legend Michael Cooper saw his jersey hoisted into the rafters at an emotional ceremony.
‘Showtime Lakers’ star Michael Cooper became the latest LA Lakers legend to have his jersey retired, joining the likes of Kobe Bryant and James Worthy.
Former teammates including Magic Johnson were at the ceremony to pay long overdue tribute to Hall of Famer Cooper.
And in further tribute to the five-times NBA champion, Magic Johnson named Cooper as one of the best defensive players he has ever seen.
Magic Johnson’s best ever NBA defenders
Magic Johnson was one of the greatest players of his generation, and any generation, a key former teammate of Michael Cooper’s.
Michael Cooper named Magic Johnson among his list of best NBA players ever, a top five that did not include Michael Jordan.
The respect is mutual, with Magic Johnson believing Cooper to be among the best ever NBA defensive players.
He told Sportskeeda: “Nobody that has played could do all the things that Michael Cooper could do. It’s probably Dennis Rodman, Michael Cooper and Scottie Pippen.
“Those three dudes, and Dennis Johnson, those four for me were the best defenders. They were fast, quick and one step didn’t mean anything.
“And they were all mean. Man when I played against all of those dudes, I hated playing against them.”

Magic Johnson said Michael Cooper made him a better player
Michael Cooper was a true LA Lakers legend, playing his entire NBA career for the franchise.
It was the same for Magic, who was a Laker for life, and while he did not therefore get to go against Cooper in a game, he saw plenty of him at practice.
Johnson explained: “People don’t understand that Michael Cooper made me a better basketball player.
“When I got to the game, I wasn’t worried about anybody! I played against the best every single day in practice.”
Magic explained that he ‘hated’ going up against the best – but in Cooper’s case, he knew it stood him in good stead and sharpened his skillset for when it mattered most.
