After her big loss at the Nationals, Taiki has assumed that Chinatsu wouldn’t be in the mood for a big celebration for her birthday. However, at practice her teammates give her just that: confetti, a party hat, a cute t-shirt, the whole nine yards. They also name her the new vice-captain. There’s a lot of gifts Taiki thought about getting her, but he’s nervous about which one—continuing to overthink.
About all that momentum Hina built up last week…well, it was all for naught. Taiki acknowledges that she told him he didn’t have to give her his answer right away, but he already has an answer for her: he likes Chinatsu-senpai, and he’s going to continue pursuing her. When he asks if that’s “okay” with her, she says it’s fine, as it’s what he expected. But neither me nor Kyou are buying it. Rejection sucks; we’ve all been there at some point.
Once practice is over, Chinatsu starts to head home and texts Taiki a sticker. To her surprise, she hears the alert sound from Taiki’s phone, he’s right behind her, and promises he wasn’t following her. They just happened to be going in the same direction: towards the home they share. Whatever the reason, Chinatsu is clearly pleases Taiki is there, and tells him she wants to go somewhere.
After a train ride, Taiki takes her to a place he once went all the time when he was younger: the beach. Not sure why he doesn’t still do it, the beach is awesome and clearly pretty close! The salty sea air and the gorgeous colors of the sunset end up cheering Chinatsu up instantly, as she splashes around in the surf like a little kid. When Taiki joins her, she almost slips and falls but he catches her. He draws away, but Chinatsu quickly re-establishes contact so she won’t fall again.
It’s Taiki who ends up falling and soaking himself, but he fortunately brought his practice clothes. As far as birthday gifts go, you can’t really beat a surprise trip to the beach with the boy you like. Taiki even brought a little cake with “17” candles. It’s the most romantic we’ve seen these two since she accidentally fell into bed with him, and it’s really a delight to see.
When the weather quickly turns and a landslide cancels the trains, Chinatsu’s birthday gets even more fun, as she and Taiki have to book the last room at a guest house. He’s nervous, naturally, and if she is too, she breaks the tension by grabbing some games from the lobby, like a proper sleepover. He also gets to see her in a yukata for the first time.
Before the games begin though, both Taiki and Chinatsu get to apologize for wrongs they believe they committed against each other. Taiki for making her think he lied about going to the fireworks in a group, and Chinatsu for drawing an arbitrary boundary between them. When her teammate calls, Taiki gets to hear what good friends she has.
When Chinatsu wakes up that morning, she finds that Taiki couldn’t manage to sleep next to her, instead choosing a chair. Rather than wake him, Chinatsu watches him sleep, cocking her head to match the angle of his and laughing when he suddenly becomes more upright. Looking out at the gorgeous sky, she says good first morning to her 17-year-old self. It should be an interesting year!
This was one of my favorite episodes of Blue Box to date because it finally let the main couple spend some quality time together have fun, and demonstrate what a cute couple they make. While there were no big brash confessions, there didn’t need to be at this stage. They simply needed to re-establish their chemistry and clear the air.
