LeBron James had problems like Jimmy Butler with Miami Heat, says Dwyane Wade, and he respects it

The Miami Heat and Jimmy Butler are on the outs, but one franchise legend thinks it’s just history repeating itself.

Jimmy Butler’s seven-game suspension from the Miami Heat will end on Friday as the Heat host the Denver Nuggets, but it’s unclear on if he will play. He has made it clear that he wants to compete, but he has lost his “joy” under Heat president Pat Riley.

After demanding a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves and being unable to secure a long-term contract with the Phialdleohia 76ers, Butler signed with the Heat, and he took them to two NBA Finals.

It appeared to be the perfect NBA marriage, but after losing in the first round of the playoffs last season, the relationship between superstar and franchise is on the rocks.

This isn’t the first time the Heat have lost a star

While Butler isn’t wearing a different jersey yet, he reportedly told Riley that he will not re-sign with Miami in free agency, and will presumably opt out of his contract at the end of the season.

He will be far from the first superstar to leave Miami on bitter terms.

In 2008, after winning a title in 2006, Shaquille O’Neal butted heads with Riley and demanded a trade. In 2014, after losing to the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals, LeBron James signed back with the Cleveland Cavaliers after four seasons with the Heat.

James is easily the most talented player to ever suit up in South Beach, but Dwyane Wade is the greatest. However, in 2016, a contract dispute led to him doing the unthinkable: leaving Miami for the Chicago Bulls.

Wade would eventually return to the Heat, but it’s become increasingly clear that he is absolutely right and the Heat are a “house divided.”

Wade offers comments on why the Heat push stars away

Say what you will about “Heat Culture” and the Butler saga: Miami has made seven Finals since 2005, so clearly the recipe works.

After Wade booked it for Chicago, he found his way back only a season and a half later. On a recent episode of his self-titled podcast, he broke down how the relationship between player and front office works.

“We’re used to iron fists,” Wade said. “We don’t hear iron fists going on over there. It’s crazy because you would think when you’re in it, you don’t want it. You think you want out, you think you want to go somewhere else.

“But then when you get out of it, you realize that that structure, that iron fist kept you in line. Not kept you in line like a little soldier, it kept you in line because this big world in the NBA will eat you alive. So, that structure kept you being able to be successful.”

Not every player is willing to take a back seat to the franchise’s brand. Wade was, as he learned, but O’Neil, James, and Butler are more about the individual.

“LeBron James only stayed four years,” Wade continued.

“It wasn’t run the way LeBron James needed it to be run, it wasn’t run the way Dwyane Wade [needed it to be run].

“It’s run the way Pat Riley is going to run it and the way the Arisons run it.”

Butler is 35 years old and likely won’t have the realization that Wade had. At this point, the marriage is on the rocks between Butler and the Heat, although if Miami fails to trade him and somehow goes on a playoff run, maybe Butler and Riley can put their differences aside in the name of winning.

Wade added: “It’s a part as a player that you don’t like. We didn’t like that _____. I don’t like the way it went down. I’m not sitting here and saying I like it.

“But also, too, you have to stand on something.

“So if the Miami Heat ain’t standing on something, then they become like a lot of these organizations in the NBA. Trying to find their identity, trying to find their culture. No, this is the culture, bro.”
