The Golden State Warriors are currently soul-searching as they consider how to try and win now without destroying their future.
Better than anybody, the Golden State Warriors know they have a generational talent with Stephen Curry, who has led the franchise to four titles.
At 36, the Warriors must maximize the end of his career, yet Curry does not want them to make rash decisions.
In a statement likely to come as a relief to GM Mike Dunleavy Jr, Curry said he wanted to the team to be responsible with their assets, in a statement that caused surprise around league circles.
Bill Simmons tips move for Nikola Vucevic
Part of the problem for the Warriors is there are not a lot of moves out there for the team right now.
The Ringer owner Bill Simmons believes one move that works, and would bring something new to Golden State, is a trade for Chicago Bulls star Nikola Vucevic.
He told his podcast: “The trade that makes sense to me is Vucevic, and it’s made say made sense for, I would say, about a month and a half.
“It’s basically, you know, Moses Moody, put [Gary] Payton’s expiring in there or another, Kyle Anderson, whatever you need to do, throw in a pick and just add Vucecic and kind of have him playing off with Curry.
“Curry has never had a stretch five in his entire career. Every every guy in the league has played with somebody, a three who could make a three, and he’s just never had it.”
The Bulls are reported to be open to trading Vucevic for the right price. Whether the Warriors actually have enough is open to debate.
Vucevic has separately been linked to the Phoenix Suns, while his performances for the Bulls have been praised.
He has been touted as a potential All-Star, and at times has overtaken Zach LaVine as a key part of the Bulls offense.
But while the Warriors have championship aspirations, the Bulls recognize their mediocrity, and may be willing to let Vucevic leave, in order to slip down the rankings ahead of the NBA Draft, and compiling future assets.
Don’t trade for Jimmy Butler
The wild option, that Stephen Curry may have been alluding to, would be to stack up as many assets as they can, to try and land a top star like Jimmy Butler, who wants out of Miami.
Simmons believes this is a non-starter, as it will leave too many holes on the roster to make the Warriors genuine contenders, even in the short-term.
He said: “The problem is, if you get somebody like Jimmy Butler, you’re going to have to give up[Andrew] Wiggins in the trade. Now, I’m losing stuff defensively. I’m losing other assets.”
