Since their accidental romantic seaside sleepover, Chinatsu and Taiki have been thick as thieves. Look at them, sharing the bathroom without the slightest hint of awkwardness! They’ve just found a good rhythm, and ever since they cleared the air about their mutual misunderstandings, they both look, feel, and act like they have been relieved of great weights.
The cultural festival is approaching, and Hina will play Snow White. My first thought would be that Taiki would be pressed into Prince duty, but instead he’s more of the class logistics guy. Kyou finally decides to make it known to Hina that he knows she’s told Taiki how she feels. Like a good friend, he’s wondering if she’s okay, even though he knows there’s no way it doesn’t hurt when the guy she loves has eyes for someone else.
When that guy ends up with Chinatsu in her otherwise empty classroom, the two daydream together about what it would be like if they were in the same grade and sat beside each other. Taiki napping and being called on, Chinatsu having the answer to bail him out…it’s just so disgustingly cute I can barely stand it! These two have never been closer or more comfortable around each other…and ain’t nothin’ bad gonna happen!
Except, something does: Chinatsu’s mom returns to Japan to take care of an elderly relative who suffered a fall. She’s renting an apartment for a month, so in that time, Chinatsu will be moving in with her. Just when these two were vibing, and just as Taiki is noting how he might not have ever interacted with Chinatsu had she not moved in, she’s moving out. The look on both their faces as this news is relayed says it all. It sucks!
The first day Chinatsu moves out, she comforts Taiki (and herself) by saying they’ll see each other at morning practice. But he’s early and gets dragged away by Haryu for a run, and she’s late because she got on the wrong train, so they missed each other and only exchanged one wordless glance the whole day.
Chinatsu forgot something at his house so she’s there when he comes home, and they communicate beautifully about their frustration over not seeing one another. But they also come to the comforting conclusion that tomorrow’s another day, and so they’ll just see each other at tomorrow’s morning practice.
Absence making the heart grow fonder is nigh undefeated in animedom, and there’s no exception here. Realizing how much he took living with Chinatsu for granted, Taiki values the moments he has with her that much more. And since they’re not awkward with each other anymore and have learned how to interact in a way that’s mutually comfortable, the two make the most of those shorter moments. The distance has made them closer than ever.
One night while watching a soap opera with her mom, one of the characters in a love triangle is being indecisive, which her mom deems to be unfair. Chinatsu, heartened by the fact Taiki isn’t currently dating Hina, realizes that it’s unfair for her to be indecisive.
During their next interaction at the gym entrance, she sees him talking badminton with a seventh grader and thinks Taiki looks super grown-up. A discussion of height ensues, and when Taiki gets on his tiptoes to demonstrate how tall he’ll eventually be, Chinatsu makes a decisive move, grabbing his shirt and pulling him down to the “perfect” height: the one she’s most familiar with.
In another Kyou/Hina interaction, I got the sense that Kyou may be hiding his own feelings for Hina, and is simply better at it than all the other goofballs in this show, though we see he once pined for a different girl who ended up with a boyfriend. As for Hina’s unrequited feelings for Taiki, Kyou admits that part of him pities her while another part admires her for putting herself out there.
When Hina is asked to make copies, she ends up in a room with her rival, and decides not to hesitate. She tells Chinatsu straight-up that she told Taiki that she likes him. And while it’s plain Chinatsu likes him too, she hasn’t come close to coming right out and saying it. Hina definitely has caution-to-the-wind initiative on her side…and yet Taiki loves Chinatsu.
It’s here where I hope Chinatsu doesn’t enter some kind of guilt spiral that will undermine her own pursuit of Taiki. Even if someone else loves the same person as you doesn’t mean they’re going about it the right way and you’re going about it wrong. Chinatsu can’t let herself get out-maneuvered. The ball is in her hands. Gotta keep two on it!
