When Masugu is late for dinner at Yui’s, he doesn’t come without an apology in the form of a box of donuts. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like donuts, but Masugu knows Yui really likes sweets, and a certain bunny mascot, and a whole lot of other things. And the more he learns about the woman he loves, the more he wants to learn. Yui is the same way, and also can’t help but surprise-kiss her boyfriend when he looks cute.
Yui is 100% aware that Somei won’t rat them out and is a good guy who can be trusted. But that doesn’t mean things aren’t automatically not awkward when the two are in a meeting together. Somei can read all of the signs that Yui is struggling with this, and wish she would just relax. But ultimately he has to use his words, and when he says she must not trust him, that’s enough for her to snap out of the weirdness.
It’s understandable for her to feel odd, because this is her first time being in a secret workplace romance that someone else knows about! And while Yui and Masugu have rules, they decide to bend them when they end up alone together in the otherwise deserted office archives. They’re almost caught by their co-workers in an embrace, and it’s an abject lesson about keeping their work and love separate. I also imagine there’s at least a little fun mixed in with the tension.
I was upfront about this not being the best-looking show—the character designs barely get by, but anything that requires actual animation is where the show suffers most. While I salute the show for being ambitious and staging a segment at a baseball game, let’s just say the less said about the visuals, the better.
What mattered is that Yui and Masugu actually discover a nice middle ground when both they and their co-workers get drunk enough at the game to be a little more informal with each other. And like Yui with her donuts, Masugu’s love of baseball is something Yui loves about him and wants to learn more about, so she suggests they return for another day, just the two of them.
