Captain Rex’s armor is unlike any other clone trooper’s in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and showrunner Dave Filoni gave it an interesting explanation. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, clone troopers are introduced with Phase 1 armor, which resembles both their sinister successors – Imperial stormtroopers – and the Mandalorian armor of their genetic template – Jango Fett. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith shows clone troopers in Phase 2 armor, which more closely resembles stormtrooper armor than Mandalorian armor.
