Taking Kai’s advice, Uka starts taking steps forward. When the class changes seats, she asks Ayumi if they can be friends, only to learn Ayumi has already been considering her a friend for a while now. While socially awkward, Uka can still tell Ayumi likes Satoru, and arranges to swap seats so she can sit next to him. She’s already got this friend thing down!
Uka’s reward for her good deed is getting to sit right next to Kai, even if she has trouble looking his way due to her crush. That said, Kai continues to nudge her towards talking to and befriending others in the class, even going so far as to call her impressive and worth knowing better. And when her other classmates say “Hiya,” she gives a wobbly “Hiya” back. She considers all these events to be little miracles, and her new seat to be magic.
Now that she sits so close to Kai, Uka realizes how little she actually knows about the guy, and wants to change that. She learns he suddenly “vanishes” sometimes, and becomes the first person to ever discover that he goes to a storage room to catch up on sleep. She delivers his freshly-washed baseball cap back to him, and learns he wears them so often because of his bed head. Learning this causes her to smile giggle with glee, a side of her Kai no doubt likes to see.
On a class hiking trip, Uka ends up being the only one to wear her gym uniform, as well as a huge rucksack no doubt filled with supplies. Reactions don’t descend into malicious teasing, but everyone is charmed by Uka’s oddness. Uka learns that all the girls get a crush on Kai at some point, and it’s a “one-way ticket to despair” because he turns them all down. She thinks she’s just another one of those girls, and the secrets like his bed head aren’t that big a deal.
But they are, and when he covers her mouth, a girl sees it and wonders what’s going on. That girl looks miffed, and later is the one who urges Uka to lead the rest of the group down a path that looks too rough. The group ends up lost and it starts to rain, leading to a cliffhanger. Did the brown-haired girl intentionally do this to get back at Uka for seeming to be so close with Kai? Possibly. Will Uka believe getting everyone lost is an adverse product of her having too big an ego? Probably!
