The LA Lakers are getting a mid-season addition with one key player returning from injury.
As things currently stand, the LA Lakers are a solid Western Conference team as they are the No. 5 seed with a 24-18 record. The problem? Two losses and they could fall well into the Play-In Tournament picture.
Many are claiming the Lakers have no path forward as a contender and that they should make a key trade. However, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the roster, the squad should be quite good, especially as they can play fully healthy.
The Lakers are seeing the return of one key defender that will elevate the team’s ceiling on the season and will give them a good mid-season bump. Jarred Vanderbilt, after being sidelined for a good while, is set to make his return to the club.
Jarred Vanderbilt clarifies how he will help the Lakers in his return
With Vanderbilt returning, he’s set to play for head coach JJ Redick for the first time. His role might look completely different than it did a season ago. He is a remarkable defender and will bring a huge boost of energy off the bench.
In case Redick doesn’t know or fans might have forgotten, Vanderbilt detailed what everyone can expect from him as he returns to the hardwood sporting the purple and gold in recent media availability.
“Going out there playing hard, playing tough, being physical. Being aggressive, being vocal out there, whether it’s rebounding, defending, and then connect the passing, whatever the case may be, just going out there and doing my part to help the team win,” Vanderbilt explained.
With high-level talents like James and Davis leading the way, having a tone-setter like Vanderbilt come off the bench is massive. If the Lakers are in need of some life and the starting lineup isn’t providing it, Vanderbilt can bring in when he’s inserted into the game.
What is the Lakers’ ceiling on the season
While James might be 40-years-old and Davis is a tad past the typical player’s prime years, the Lakers are relying on those two for massive impacts on a nightly basis. That can be a lot on those two, considering they don’t have a wealth of help around them.
Los Angeles has already made one key in-season move when acquiring Dorian Finney-Smith and they should continue to try and make more moves to add depth around James and Davis.
Needless to say, with two high-level superstars on the roster, anything is possible for the Lakers. If the team’s supporting cast and role players can step up at the right time, there is no true limit as to warty they can accomplish. Still, it feels like they will continue to get in their own way as it pertains to roster building and giving themselves their best chance to win a title.
If Vanderbilt can return to form and Finney-Smith gets comfortable within the squad, the Lakers could be headed in the right direction in terms of putting depth around James and Davis.
