According to a report by Reuters, Mitsubishi is considering not joining the planned merger between Honda and Nissan. Sources told the news outlet that Mitsubishi, which is 34.01% owned by Nissan, plans to remain listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange while working together with both automakers.
Last December, it was confirmed that Honda and Nissan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the possibility of a merger. Both companies aim to reach a definitive agreement concerning execution of the business integration (including the share transfer plan) by June 2025, following which a holding company would be set up by August 2026.
As for Mitsubishi, it was announced at the time that the company reached a basic agreement to proceed with discussions for it to become the third member of the “new alliance.” In a release, the company said it aims to reach a decision on its participation by the end of January 2025.
While Mitsubishi has yet to issue a statement on whether it will join Honda and Nissan, media reports in Japan suggest the company isn’t keen on doing so over concerns it would be difficult for it to affect management decisions of the joint holding company given its relatively small size.
