hen he hears another report of demons at the abandoned mansion, Kiyoka rushes there and finds a member of the group behind the attacks: “Gifted Communion.” This member helpfully informs Kiyoka of the group’s leader and founder (Usui Naoshi) and its goal: supernatural abilities and equality for all. Kiyoka’s dad helps out in the ensuing battle (the old man’s got some moves!) and when the giant demon monster is defeated, it transforms back into a human with a vial of blood around his neck.
Back at the Kudou mansion, a newly arrived Arata apologizes to Fuyu for barging into her home and scolds Kiyo for being so reckless. That said, he agrees with her that she’s the only one who can save the young man. So she goes back into his mind, with Arata beside her on the outside for support. She manages to free the lad from a demon in his dream pulling him into the murky liquid ground, thanks to her “light of goodness.” Fuyu watches her daughter-in-law-to-be, and is clearly impressed. When Kiyoka returns, the triumphant Miyo flies into his arms with joy and relief.
Kiyoka then tells Arata everything he’s learned about Gifted Communion, even if it isn’t much. When the name Usui Naoshi comes up Arata is taken aback, for that’s the name of a long-absent member of the Usui, a branch family of the Usaba clan—and the man formerly betrothed to Miyo’s mom! That night Kiyoka and Miyo spend some time on the balcony. He puts his military coat around her slender shoulders, and he reiterates how much she means to him, and how he intends for them to be a team, making up for each other where they fall short. They then share what I believe is their first kiss.
That kiss keeps poor bashful Miyo up all night, worried she’ll never be able to look at Kiyoka again. But as she’s packing to return to the city with him, Fuyu arrives in her room. After noticing the fine western dress Miyo owns, Fuyu proceeds to toss a lot of insults Miyo’s way, and further berates her for being so apologetic and nervous. But at the same time, Fuyu is there because she acknowledges Miyo as someone who could be worthy of her son. She even gives her a ribbon that was once hers as a gift!
Heartened by Kiyoka’s suddenly approving tsundere mom, who also tells Kiyoka to ensure Miyo is less timid the next time they come (which is a tacit invitation for her to return), Miyo dons the western dress and Fuyu’s ribbon for the journey home. She almost immediately won over the Kudou family’s servants, but she also won over Kiyoka’s parents. Watching from her bedroom window, Fuyu even betrays a smile. She hit Miyo with everything she had, but she didn’t break, and showed her quality.
Unfortunately, winning over her fiance’s mom is the least of Miyo and Kiyoka’s worries. Upon arriving at the train station back in the city, the two of them and Arata are suddenly set upon by a strange feeling, like they’ve just been shut off from the rest of the world. They are approached by the man who did this, wearing a cloak, hat, and coke bottle glasses. He introduces himself as Usui Naoshi, and refers to Miyo … as his dear daughter. Just when you thought the family drama was over, here it is boiling up with a vengeance!
