LeBron James had a lot of emotions just a few months into his stint with the Miami Heat, questioning his decision.
LeBron James‘ decision to sign with the Miami Heat was a monumental one. The legendary star went from a beloved face to the hated heel of the entire league with his move.
After seven unsuccessful years with the Cavaliers, James made the call to join a team where he stood a chance to win an NBA championship. Many criticized the call for making the league too one-sided, including one former NBA champion who referred to James’ jump as cheating.
In hindsight, it’s hard to argue with his decision to make the jump. Of course, he had problems with the franchise, as Dwyane Wade recently revealed. But his two championship wins there cemented him as an all-time great.
At the time, however, there were many who asked questions about the choice. And as it turns out, one of those people was LeBron James.

LeBron James emotionally questioned his decision
In a recent ESPN profile piece for his entourage member Randy Mims, LeBron James spoke about his move to the Heat.
“He [LeBron] was lonely. His then-girlfriend and now wife, Savannah, and their two boys, Bronny and Bryce, were still living in Cleveland, some 1,300 miles away.”
“His jerseys were being burned across Northeast Ohio. For the first time in his career, he was a villain, a heel.”
“His mind was spiraling. His decision just a few months earlier to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers, the franchise that drafted him as a teenager to play just 45 minutes from his hometown in Akron, Ohio, already felt like the wrong one.”
He noted that one night, a few months after he joined, he was emotionally questioning his decision. James called Mims, who helped talk him through the situation.
“When Mims emerged from his front door, he found a burgundy Bentley in the driveway. James, just 25 at the time, had parked himself on the hood. He was crying.”
“I’m not sure I’m doing this right,” James said. “I’m not sure I made the right decision to come here.”
The two close friends talked about the decision late into the night. Mims was able to give James the perspective he needed at the moment to work through his emotional struggles.

James found his swagger in Miami
James’ first season with the Heat was definitely tough. But as time went on, LeBron made a home in Miami, establishing himself as the undisputed best player in the world.
In fact, one can argue James needed to move to the Heat to get over the hump of winning an NBA championship. While James was an excellent player before, he struggled to win a ring.
After four years in Miami, where James and the Heat went to four consecutive Finals and won two NBA championships, LeBron would return home to Cleveland.
It was a controversial decision at the time, and James didn’t do himself any favors. He famously informed his teammate, Chris Bosh, of his decision via text message.
But for LeBron, home was where the heart was. And he returned home to Cleveland to fulfill a promise – winning an NBA championship.
Despite the struggles, James completed the promise, guiding the Cavs to the 2016 NBA championship, their first and only in franchise history.
