The Phoenix Suns could look to another Eastern Conference All-Star as their pursuit of Jimmy Butler goes slow.
The Phoenix Suns desperately want to trade for Jimmy Butler. Their big three experiment with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal hasn’t worked. Butler’s arrival might be their last shot at success.
As they sit 10th in the NBA with a 22-21 record, things need to change. But Bradley Beal poses a challenge to any potential move with his no-trade clause.
Richard Jefferson believes the Butler trade will come down to Beal’s whims. However, some are optimistic, with one former star claiming that Butler will be a Sun.
But what if a deal for Butler cannot materialize? Well, it appears the Suns have identified a backup plan, and it certainly isn’t a bad one.

Phoenix Suns want Zach LaVine
Jake Fischer is reporting that the Phoenix Suns could be a landing spot for Zach LaVine. He did mention that any potential trade would depend on how the trade market plays out.
“Sources say Phoenix, to name one example, could emerge with interest in exploring a swap of Bradley Beal for LaVine, sources said, depending on how the rest of the trade landscape develops in the coming weeks.”
Fischer also mentioned in the report that LaVine would prefer to stay with the Bulls. On top of that, he isn’t pushing for any trade.
“… LaVine, who has put himself in contention for a third career All-Star selection with his strong play for the Bulls thus far this season, would prefer to remain in Chicago beyond the Feb. 6 deadline.”
“In LaVine’s case, sources say, he has not been pushing to be moved. Yet that, to be clear, won’t necessarily insulate LaVine from being dealt if an offer Chicago likes surfaces in the next 13 days.”
LaVine would be a great alternative to Butler, as the Bulls star has played well. Despite the Bulls struggling, LaVine has shined on the court.
Would LaVine improve the Suns?
Zach LaVine has been playing some brilliant basketball this season. Averaging 24.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, the former All-Star has been near-Jordan-esque.
But LaVine, much like Beal, is a score-first guard who has long been the first option on his team. Asking him to play a tertiary role behind Durant and Booker might affect his play.
On top of that, LaVine is an average defender, which the Suns already have too many of on their roster. Replacing a mediocre defender in Beal with another one in LaVine will not make a difference.
The Suns might want to think more closely about this move. But LaVine is definitely an option worth considering, despite his weaknesses.
