Aggies hit 16 threes in blowout win over Air Force

Utah State Men’s Basketball picked up their second blowout win of the week on Saturday, dominating the Air Force Falcons 87-58. The Aggies hit an impressive 16 threes and had four players in double-digits in their road victory.

“I was really proud of our guys … make 16 threes again, 22 assists, hold them under 60 the last two games we’ve played on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Jerrod Calhoun after the win. “If you’re going to win a league title, get to the NCAA tournament, you can’t be a one-trick pony. I think we’re starting to understand that.”

The Aggies got off to a slow start, scoring just four points in the first three and a half minutes. Luckily for USU, the Falcons had only six points in that time. Utah State got into a rhythm at that point and rattled off a 22-4 run to jump out to a 16-point lead.

Air Force finally responded with a two-pointer, just to be hit by a Dexter Akanno three on the other end to give the Aggies a 29-12 lead, their largest of the half. The Falcons called a timeout to stop the bleeding and the Aggies’ hot shooting.

Air Force responded to the Aggie run out of the timeout, forcing some missed shots and whittling the USU lead down to just six late in the half. Utah State struggled to hit shots during the Air Force comeback and generally struggled to get points inside the arc in the half.

The Aggies connected on just five of 14 two-point shot attempts in the first half. Their hot three-point shooting saved them though, connecting on hit 10 triples and shooting at an over 50% clip from deep in the half. Utah State eventually went into the locker room up nine, leading 42-33.

“I think as we get further and further on in the season, we’re used to spacing where each other is going to be, knowing where our shooters are and being able to make that extra pass to each other,” said forward Isaac Johnson after the game. Johnson had 12 points on four made threes, a career-high for him.

The Falcons kept hanging around in the early goings of the second half, again trimming the Utah State lead to six. Again, the Aggies responded with a three, this time from Tucker Anderson, to lengthen it back to nine.

Air Force started the second half strong and looking to make the game close. The Falcons started forcing the issue, pressing the Aggies in the backcourt and forcing a few turnovers after only forcing one during the first half.

After again falling behind by double-digits in the early minutes of the half, Air Force again fought back to just a seven-point deficit with 13:21 remaining.

It was at this point Utah State took control of the game, going on a 16-1 run to pull out to a 22-point lead. It was all Aggies the rest of the way as they blew out the Falcons behind an impressive second-half performance.

“It is nice to have all of our team back and healthy and feeling good,” Johnson said. “Now that everybody’s feeling better, I think it is something that has helped us to move forward.”

Utah State’s 29-point win over Air Force wraps up a fruitful week coming out of their bye week. USU won their matchups against Nevada and Air Force this week by a combined 50 points. With home bouts against UNLV and New Mexico lurking in the week to come, the Aggies needed a dominant week like this one.

“We talk about it daily. We show numbers. We show them all the metrics each week,” Calhoun said. “At the end of the day, it’s about, you know, competing for league titles. And we’re right there, and, you know, it’s going to be really hard.”

The upcoming week for Utah State will be critical in their regular season title hopes as they sit just a half-game behind New Mexico for the top spot in the league.

After two straight big wins, the Aggies will look for revenge against UNLV on Wednesday night in the Spectrum.
