Earlier this month, Anthony Edwards made headlines when he dropped a major statement regarding his offensive responsibility for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the wake of his co-star Karl-Anthony Towns’ exit.
The superstar guard, out of the team’s overall struggles, set the record straight that he’s been exhausted from facing constant double-teams by opposing teams. It immediately drew mixed reaction and criticism from fans and pundits in which Gilbert Arenas dismissed his claim.
Fed up about these schemes and hardships, Edwards was heavily determined to look for urgent answers. And apparently, it landed him towards an unforeseen event by approaching an intriguing one — none other than Michael Jordan.
Mark Jones reveals that Anthony Edwards approached Michael Jordan
During ESPN’s Saturday national television broadcast of the Timberwolves’ marquee showdown against the Denver Nuggets, play-by-play broadcaster Mark Jones dropped a huge revelation around Edwards.
Jones, commentating during the game, revealed that Edwards reached out with Michael Jordan and consulted the basketball great about how to deal with the offensive pressure and challenges imposed by double teams.
“He’s not afraid to reach out with some of the greats of the game. Some of the greats — the old heads — and get some advice,” Jones said of Edwards.
“I was told by somebody in his circle that three weeks ago he reached out to Michael Jordan for advice on how to handle some of the double teams and traps that he’s seeing.
“He’s been extremely frustrated up until late.”
Michael Jordan is a master of his craft
It’s an interesting and bold pursuit made by Edwards. Nevertheless, he didn’t make a mistake in identifying Jordan as someone who could help him.
Jordan’s immense talent and level of offensive threat shouldn’t be discussed anymore. As the greatest ever, he encountered countless defensive pressures every single game during his dynasty days with the Chicago Bulls.
Regardless, all of these double teams and defensive coverage didn’t fully work as Jordan was just simply unstoppable, and his NBA record of 10 scoring titles is a clear evidence of that.
Right now, the work continues for both Edwards and the Timberwolves in finding solutions about their offensive dilemma.
While Minnesota is middling in league ranking in terms of their 15th offensive rating (113.0) 22nd collective points per game (110.1) this season, the 23-year-old is doing his best in carrying the team’s massive load in offense, averaging a career-best 26.2 points and 42.6 percent three-point shooting.
