It’s not a mystery why comedians flock to the Big Apple.
New York City is home to iconic clubs like Noam Dworman’s Comedy Cellar. More than a few stand-ups have found fame and fortune via the City That Never Sleeps.
That was then. Today, New York is a haven for crime, homelessness and dysfunctional government. And some locals don’t take kindly to unwoke jokes.
So says Tyler Fischer, the rising star from “Lady Ballers,” “Terror on the Prairie” and now a new FOX Nation comedy special, “Tyler Fischer: No Pardon Needed.”
Fischer told The Hollywood in Toto Podcast why he decamped to Austin, Texas while keeping some roots back in New York.
“The [Democratic] political party was really destroying the city,” Fischer told the podcast. “It’s an incredible city, but it became dangerous. I was robbed by a homeless guy. He put my phone down his pants. That will scar you … just push me in the subway tracks at that point,” he cracked.
Crime wasn’t the only reason why he moved to Austin, Texas, home of Joe Rogan’s Comedy Mothership club.
“I was getting a lot of attacks for my comedy after shows. It was one percent of the crowd, but I was getting chased down by packs of feminist women. It sounds like an exaggeration but every night something would happen.”
Fischer pokes fun at Dr. Anthony Fauci, COVID-19 overreach and former President Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive decline. He also mocks the “woke mind virus,” another no-no for progressive comedy fans.
All of the above put a target, of sorts, on his back.
That wasn’t the case at Rogan’s Mothership, where comedians can tell their jokes their way without repercussions.
“It felt like more of a celebration of comedy in Texas,” he said of both the Mothership and Austin’s comedy spirit.

He decided to split the difference. He kept some New York ties but found a place in the greater Austin area as well.
That dual home setup has its advantages above and beyond any crime concerns.
“When you’re on stage and you’re getting pushback, it almost turns into a debate where you really have to articulate your points. And the joke might not land, so you have to keep going,” he said. “It helps you strengthen the joke.”
“I found that if I went back to New York and worked on the material, and then brought it to Austin as a sort of celebration of the material, I was getting better,” he said.
