The Miami Heat have made a decision on the potential arrival of Bradley Beal, and it isn’t good news for the Phoenix Suns or Jimmy Butler.
The Miami Heat have been struggling to find the right deal for Jimmy Butler. While some suggest they are waiting for the right deal, their issues with Butler continue to hurt the team.
Butler was most recently suspended by the Miami Heat for missing practices and team flights. Channing Frye gave some insight into what the situation was, and why the Heat were so upset.
The former All-Star has made it clear that he wants to leave, and in particular, wants to join the Phoenix Suns.
But it appears the Heat have made a decision that might cost Butler that move. And it of course involves Bradley Beal.
Miami Heat don’t want Bradley Beal
Jake Fischer recently reported that the Miami Heat don’t want to take big salaries in exchange for Jimmy Butler.
Players like Beal, who earn a lot of money over several years, don’t align with the Heat’s timeline.
He explains: “Sources say Miami is also against acquiring players in exchange for Butler who have significant future money, like Beal, remaining on their contracts.”
“[They] seek promising young players, impact veterans, and draft capital when trading away a talented player like Butler…”
“The Heat’s desire to maintain financial flexibility has also made it natural to point to a team or two as likely trade partners if there is time for a workable Butler trade construction to be assembled.”
This strategy does make sense. But why exactly are the Heat so insistent on not taking on players with contracts longer than a few years?
Heat’s future is in jeopardy
In the same report, Fischer pointed out that the Heat want to compete for a playoff spot this season. Even with Butler leaving, they want to reach the playoffs. But why is that?
Well, the reason is for their future. The Heat owes a draft pick to the Thunder this year which is lottery-protected. And if they do get a lottery pick this season, they owe an unprotected pick to the Thunder in 2026.
As a result, the Heat would forgo this year’s draft pick if it is outside the lottery, rather than give up an unprotected pick the following year.
“The Heat, to be clear, remain focused on competing for the playoffs, sources say, rather than straying into lottery land… Miami has a particular incentive to clinch a playoff berth this spring.”
“The Heat’s 2025 first-round pick is lottery-protected … or else it goes to — you guessed it — Oklahoma City.”
“If the Heat were to retain this June’s first-round selection because they missed the playoffs, Miami would then owe a fully unprotected pick to Oklahoma City in 2026.”
Fischer also noted Heat giving up their 2026 unprotected pick would force them to send a 2028 pick to the Hornets as part of the Terro Rozier deal.
There is a lot riding on this deal for the Heat. And Pat Riley has made it clear, he will prioritize the Heat over Butler’s desires.
