The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored to be on the hunt for a scorer to save their offense amid an injury-riddled season, but they might already have one on the roster.
With the Western Conference playoff race as tight as it’s been in recent years, the Dallas Mavericks, who won the conference last season, have slid down the standings and hold ninth place, meaning they will likely have to battle their way through the Play-In Tournament.
The Mavericks have been decimated by injuries this season. Dante Exum is yet to suit up, Luka Doncic has been out since Christmas, Dereck Lively II is missing extended time, and Maxi Kleber broke his foot on Saturday, among other woes to key players.
As a result, the Mavericks have been rumored to be active on the trade market searching for a scorer to boost their offense, although they might have the answer already on the roster.
Second-year wing has been given a larger role
Last year, Olivier-Maxence Prosper was buried on the depth chart behind Derrick Jones Jr., PJ Washington, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Daniel Gafford during his rookie season. This year, it’s been much of the same story, although Klay Thompson is now the starting shooting guard.
However, in the wake of injuries, Prosper–who was picked 24th overall in 2023–has played 19 minutes in four of the last five games.
During that stretch, Dallas is 2-3, and Prosper has managed to average just 8.8 points.
This season, he is shooting only 27.3% from 3-point range. While he can be a solid rebounder, the Mavericks, who boast the seventh-best offense in the NBA, need him to carry some weight as their best players deal with injuries.
For as much as Jason Kidd would love to make him a rotational piece, his track record thus far indicates he has a long way to go. But his recent performances are sending a message to Jason Kidd that deserves the opportunity he is getting.
Prosper’s slow development was to be expected
Despite being a high-level athlete ready for the physicality of the NBA, Prosper’s inefficient offense in college suggested he would be a work in progress despite three NCAA seasons.
Still, with a deep roster, the Mavericks expected him to be able to take his time finding his footing. Last season, that was absolutely the case, but in 2024-25, injuries have caused the franchise to call his number, and have found mixed results.
In the Mavericks’ most recent win on Monday against the Washington Wizards, Prosper put up an excellent 20 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor. However, three games before that, he went 0-3 from deep in a one-point loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Prosper has shown enough flashes that some fans have expected him to emerge as a solid backup option when needed, but so far he hasn’t showcased the reliability that high-level NBA wings need.
