Los Angeles Lakers head coach seemingly blamed his team’s near-embarrassing defeat on hectic travel.
The LA Lakers started the first quarter against the Charlotte Hornets with a scoring outburst, led by none other than Anthony Davis.
In fact, the 17-time NBA champions led by as many as 23 points. However, as the game progressed, the Lakers allowed the Hornets to cut their lead.
After four quarters, the Lakers still pulled away with a win, but the final score stood at 112-107, a mere five-point win.
JJ Redick on the Lakers’ ‘mental errors’ vs Hornets
Considering the Hornets are the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference, no one expected them to defeat the in-form Purple and Gold.
The result became clearer when LaMelo Ball was ruled out of the matchup due to an ankle sprain in the second quarter. Despite that, the Hornets almost eradicated the Lakers’ big lead and stole a win from the Western Conference juggernauts.
“We played hard for four quarters. Now, it was not pretty, but we played hard for four quarters. I think for me, we made a lot of mental errors tonight,” JJ Redick said after the game.
“I don’t know if that’s coming off Saturday and the long flight yesterday and getting acclimated to the East Coast time but felt a little bit of brain fog less so than the guys just not playing [hard],” coach Redick added.
Considering the Lakers are a Western Coast team going on a road trip to the opposite end of the country can be tricky.
Either way, they are now scheduled to take on the Philadelphia 76ers as part of a back-to-back matchup. Fans will hope that the team is well-rested and can extend its winning streak.

The Lakers are playing their best basketball of the season
With JJ Redick taking on the team’s helm as a first-time head coach, the Lakers took their sweet time to adjust to his system.
As a result, there were multiple winnable games that the Lakers ended up losing. So much so that many even wrote them off for the 2024-25 NBA season.
However, Redick and Co. have well and truly bounced back this season. They are currently on a four-game winning streak and have won six out of their last seven games.
LeBron James has been elite during this stretch, and now Anthony Davis is picking up the pace as well. If the Purple and Gold continue to play at this level, they may earn a top-four finish in the Western Conference when it’s all said and done.
Right now, they are the fifth seed with a 26-18 record and are just 2.5 games behind the third-seed, Memphis Grizzlies.
