I don’t know if Hina knew how Chinatsu would react to her telling her that she likes Taiki, but does she end up learning that Chinatsu is living apart from Taiki for the next month. Other than that, she doesn’t get much out of Chinatsu regarding her own feelings for Taiki, but it’s plain after Hina leaves the copy room that Chinatsu isn’t jazzed about it.
Even with Chinatsu temporarily not living at Taiki’s place, I don’t think Hina has any realistic expectation of winning, so she does the next best thing: plant a kernel in Taiki’s head. She tells him she’ll attend his informal practice with Sajikawa because she “wants to see the guy she likes give it his all.” So when Chinatsu says she’ll attend too, Taiki knows what that means.
Hina isn’t above having a little fun with Taiki when she can, so when he enters the classroom where she’s practicing the final Snow White scene, she gets a kick out of him seeing that Snow White is kissed by the prince (why wouldn’t he know that off the bat?) and is also pleased her invitation for him to kiss her for real made his heart flutter, even if he had no intention of kissing her.
Taiki is currently at war with himself, thinking he’s alone in a vast waterless desert, pursuing badminton greatness. He’s so focused on getting better he highlights only the flaws. Everyone around him says he’s rapidly improving, but he doesn’t feel it. Instead, he feels like a coward for rejecting Hina but hesitating to pursue Chinatsu.
Haryu tells Chinatsu about Taiki in the desert, only seeing where it’s falling short. But Chinatsu tells him that all Taiki can do—all any of them can do—is keep moving their feet, because standing still only hurts more. I get Taiki wanting to retreat into badminton—he wants to reach nationals and beat Yusa, both admirable goals. But him and Chinatsu continuing to stand still isn’t doing either of them any good.
