Draymond Green will go down as an all-time great and could end up as a one-franchise player.
Despite outlandish suggestions he could be traded to Detroit, it appears Draymond Green is a Golden State Warriors star for life.
Draymond has played a critical role in the Warriors era of success, a four-times NBA champion and one-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
It could quite easily have been different. Green was taken with the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft – and he had his sights set on another team, not landing in Golden State.
Draymond Green wanted to be on the Miami Heat
Like most players entering the 2012 draft, LeBron James’ Miami Heat were viewed as the dream destination.
After falling down the board, Draymond Green believed there was a real chance he could have been selected with the Heat’s 27th pick.
The Heat selected Arnett Moultrie instead, a decision that left Green enraged and confused.
He explained via his YouTube channel: “Miami was one of the teams that I thought would be really high on me during the draft.
“And I’m sliding, it baffled me to see the Miami Heat draft Arnett Moultrie, because I’m like, draft Arnett Moultrie like, this guy had all kind of character red flags when he was coming out in the draft.
“The upside of him as a player was insane. But he had all kind of character issue red flags, and I’m like ‘they going to draft this guy but they talk about all of the character stuff and how you got to be a high character guy to play in Miami?’.”
Draymond Green went on to express that he thought he could really have helped the all-conquering Miami Heat.
He said: “I would watch those teams, those Miami teams with ‘Bron, D-Wade and Bosh, and I could have fit right in there.
“I could have brought exactly what that team needed, [and] a low salary ‘cos I was low pick in the first round. I felt that way.”
Green would go onto become a fierce rival for LeBron James with the Warriors, emerging as a threat once he had switched back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Warriors got the best of their battles, beating the Heat in three of four NBA finals they contested – but the enduring memory for many is their clash in 2016 that saw Draymond suspended for game six, as LeBron James steered the Cavaliers towards an epic 3-1 comeback.
The Game 7 was one that impacted Draymond Green’s own confidence, while nowadays he and LeBron James are great pals, to the extend that James to the Warriors trade rumors occasionally pop up, half based on the strength of their connection.
The Warriors star’s admiration for LeBron is just as strong as it was back in 2012.
What happened to Arnett Moultrie
The Miami Heat’s selection of Arnett Moultrie did not work out as one that was worth passing on Draymond Green for.
The Heat traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers for Justin Hamilton and a future first round pick. Hamilton only played 31 games for the Heat and was later traded to Minnesota.
Moultrie played 59 games across two seasons for the 76ers before falling out of the league. He has since carved out a career outside the USA, playing in Turkey, Iran, Russia, and China among others.
As for the first round pick the Heat acquired for Moultrie, that was later traded as part of a three-team deal in 2014 that saw Jordan Crawford head to the Warriors and briefly team up with Draymond.
