When Usui Naoshi shows up, Kiyoka is quick to prepare his lightning for battle, while Arata pulls his gun. But as we later learn, Usui has command over every message their five senses send to them, so he can slow time, vanish, and appear dangerously close to Miyo, ominously telling his daughter (if that’s what she really is) he’ll “come for her again.”
Thankfully, both Miyo’s status as Kiyoka’s wife-to-be and as potentially the most powerful ability-user of the Usaba family mean she is place under even greater protection. Until further notice she’ll be accompanying Kiyoka to work. Not only that, but a female ability-user and officer named Jinnouchi Kaoruko (Tomatsu Haruka) is appointed as her personal bodyguard.
You can tell Kaoruko is excited to have another woman—the only other woman—on the military base (she was allowed in the military because she’s an ability-user). They quickly become friends, and Kaoruko takes Miyo on a tour, ending in the dojo when she handily defeats a guy in a sparring session. But no matter what looks or words come Kaoruko’s way, she stands tall, proud, and confident in her abilities. She is a shining role model for Miyo to admire and follow.
That evening, Miyo tells Kiyoka about her day, and how she learned how good the dining options are at the base, and asks if he would prefer if she didn’t keep making him bento for lunch. He firmly sets her straight, telling her he eats her bento because he wants to, and they make him happy, so if she would please keep making them, that would be ideal. Miyo is relieved, and the couple hold hands as they admire the lovely moon.
As his investigation proceeds, Arata learns that Usui Naoshi was a child prodigy who was very arrogant, impudent and violent—the kind of kid that would have people thinking even back then that “yeah, he’s season two big bad material.” What of Usui’s claim he’s Miyo’s father? The one person who was something like a friend to Usui was Sumi—Miyo’s mom.
Miyo dreams of the two having what must’ve been a common interaction: Sumi scolding Usui for “excessive self-defense,” but also helping him up when he holds out his hand. Dreams like this may prove to be key to understanding Usui and what he might do next. If that means Miyo will be more than a damsel to be protected, I’m all for it.
