De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings are now approaching the end of the road after seven years of partnership.
As reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Sacramento Kings are now willing to listen to trade offers around De’Aaron Fox ahead of Feb. 9 deadline — it is the latest twist for a side now now playing their best basketball for 2024-25 under the new leadership of Doug Christie, following Mike Brown’s dismissal.
The Kings’ intent to part ways with Fox can be traced to the All-Star guard’s unwillingness to recommit himself to the franchise, after turning down a three-year max extension last offseason. Previously, Fox let it be known that he’ll only entertain a renewed deal if Sacramento is competing at the highest level.
With the Kings — 10th place in the West with 24-22 — determined to cash in rather than risk losing Fox for nothing in 2026, speculation is rising over where he could be traded to.
Here are the top five teams that make sense as potential landing spots for the departing Kings guard.
San Antonio Spurs
There should be no questions to ask on why the San Antonio Spurs sit atop the list for the Fox sweepstakes.
San Antonio are on the hunt to identify the best possible co-star to pair with Victor Wembanyama. As such, Fox surely fits their criteria in terms of the position, production, and timeline.
Although the Spurs have provided a bevy of floor generals to surround Wembanyama like Chris Paul, Stephon Castle, and Tre Jones, Fox is simply a greater one to consider who would strengthen their existing options, and be a true compliment to the Frenchman.
Even if the Spurs are outside of the competitive picture right now as the current No. 12 in the West with 20 wins, Fox would surely jump at the chance to team up with the sophomore sensation and perhaps dominate the NBA for years to come.
Houston Rockets
The Houston Rockets are really on the rise. From being one of the league’s cellar dwellers in the past four seasons, they have taken off just like their name, and are now enjoying a meteoric rise as a top-two team in the West.
To put it simply enough, the Rockets’ current success is what Fox easily aspires for himself at the collective standpoint.
Although Kelly Iko of The Athletic already revealed that they aren’t interested in threading the needle for Fox, considering their blossoming young core and ongoing emergence, the Rockets’ best possible chance to take the next step is to make a swing for the Sacramento guard.
Fox running the point for Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Jalen Green — if not be thrown as a main piece to the Kings — would provide thrilling hoops to watch in H-Town.
Miami Heat
The Miami Heat has endured the loudest noise over the past couple of weeks due to their continuing drama with Jimmy Butler. And with nine days left in the calendar before the deadline, they can’t be more desperate now to shut off the rumblings down, and move forward at peace without their disgruntled lead man.
Perhaps the Heat could finally work a Butler deal, as the Kings are also at the same dilemma now with Fox.
Fox going to Miami would be a tremendous development. Not only will it greatly improve the Heat, but it will also allow the 27-year-old to reunite with Bam Adebayo and ignite that old Kentucky connection.
Yet, the Heat will certainly have a tough task to acquire Fox from the Kings. Sacramento has to match Butler’s $48 million salary, and it’ll require them to add more pieces to package Fox in Miami.
The Kings won’t fully allow themselves to be the losers of a possible transaction, especially as they could endure Butler’s shenanigans for the rest of the year.
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets are in the midst of a big-time rebuild project. After their attempted run with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets have learned their lesson and are now eager to construct and prepare for a more sustainable future.
And from that plan, it won’t be bad to accelerate their rebuilding by pursuing the play of Fox and handing him the keys of the entire organization.
Instead of being the sellers, in which Cam Johnson is their coveted asset, it would be interesting to see Brooklyn being the buyers, by obtaining Fox from Sacramento. The Nets, armed with plethora of enticing draft selections and salary-matching players, can hammer a solid proposal to help the Kings take a rebuild route.
Joining the Nets is a interesting scenario for Fox as it would reconnect him with former Sacramento assistant and current Brooklyn mentor Jordi Fernandez. The Canadian mentor played a huge role in Fox’s ascension in becoming an All-Star and one of the league’s elite guards.
Orlando Magic
An absolute wildcard in this race for Fox, the Orlando Magic is also a desirable destination for the Kings guard considering the team’s assets available, and goal to continue leaping forward.
The Magic might be silent right now within the market, but they’ve been identified as one of the key few teams by Sam Amick of The Athletic who expressed past desire in pursuing Fox. And with the Kings open the doors to discuss a pact around the point guard, they might want to revive that old interest back.
After years of rebuilding, Orlando is now fully equipped and ready to push on at the highest level. Behind Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, they have shown real promise this season despite the injuries to the two, going for 24 wins as the No. 7 team in East.
Fox becoming that third star in Orlando stands as a desirable option that the Magic could seize to strongly establish their position as one of the NBA’s teams of the future.
