The Sacramento Kings are set for an unwanted basketball divorce with De’Aaron Fox.
As initially revealed by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Sacramento Kings are now determined to cut their ties with De’Aaron Fox ahead of the trade deadline, showing a willingness to listen to offers from other rival teams.
As Fox remained reluctant to recommit himself to a long-term extension with the franchise, which he previously explained, Sacramento is desperate to capitalize right now to get the best possible return for the All-Star guard.
Fox is scheduled to head into free agency in 2026, and the Kings would rather trade him now than lose him for nothing with several possible teams being their logical partners for a deal.

Brian Windhorst on the Kings’ possible pursuit for Jimmy Butler in De’Aaron Fox trade
As the Kings have suddenly entered the trade market with full intent in dealing Fox away, many fans have perceived that the Miami Heat could perhaps help them out.
The Kings have a similar sense of urgency with the Heat, who are presently embroiled and looking to end their long-standing drama with Jimmy Butler, who now serves his third team suspension.
Amid intrigue by some for a potential straight Butler-Fox swap between the Kings and the Heat, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst argued in The Hoop Collective Podcast that a transaction between both sides involving the two league stars is far from reality.
According to the NBA analyst, Butler is not interested in the Sacramento Kings, and there is little interest in the team’s part either.
“As of the recording of this podcast, I do not believe that Jimmy Butler going to Sacramento is part of the option here,” Windhorst said. “I have my reasons for that.”
While he added that the situation ‘could change’, Windhorst further noted: “There’s not been discussion, I think, with the Butler side. Not that that’s absolutely vital, but I can just leave it at that.”
He added: “I don’t think Jimmy Butler is what the Kings are looking for.”
No chances for Bradley Beal trade in Sacramento either
Sitting at the 10th spot of the West with a 24-22 card, the Kings are caught in a tricky situation over their next move.
Even with the looming departure of De’Aaron Fox, Sacramento appears motivated to move forward and contend as best as possible.
But even in this bold ambition, acquiring Butler wouldn’t create a truly compelling chances to compete for a title with DeMar DeRozan and Domantas Sabonis, it’s still not enough.
Knowing the disgruntled Heat star’s personality and chances to enter free agency as he holds a $52m 2025-26 player option, it would be a risky decision for the Kings to acquire Butler too.
Besides, they can still go for a much better asking price from the other teams, in which the San Antonio Spurs are believed to be a team to watch.
Regarding another marquee name in the NBA’s trade speculation, Windhorst also dismissed a Bradley Beal deal to Sacramento as part of a multi-team trade.
“I don’t think [Bradley] Beal makes sense for the Kings,” Windhorst said. “They can do better than that.”
With the Feb. 6 deadline slowly approaching, we will soon find out how the Kings, Heat, and Butler situations unfold.
