Bronny James returned to the LA Lakers team in their game with the Philadelphia 76ers, and it did not go well.
The LA Lakers lost the game and Bronny James failed to score a point during his 15 minutes on court.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick admitted Bronny did not play well, and admitted he may have been mistaken to throw him into a tough televised road trip and short notice.
It created a real talking point, with LeBron James‘ son struggling to convert his impressive G League play to the NBA.
Stephen A. Smith was critical of LeBron James over Bronny
Speaking on First Take following the Lakers’ loss to the 76ers, analyst Stephen A. Smith expressed concern about Bronny James, and urged his four-times NBA Champion father to seize the initiative.
He said: I’m really trying to be as respectful as I can be towards LeBron James. I am pleading with LeBron James as a father stop this…. stop this.”
Adding that Bronny’s NBA career average of 0.3 points per game would lead to criticism, he said: “How are you doing him favors? We know he’s not ready yet.”
Stephen A. Smith defends his take and stands by it
Speaking via his own YouTube channel, Stephen A. Smith says he has been left angry by the reaction to his words, which he claims were not an attack on LeBron James’ parenting.
He explained: “I feel the need to elaborate even further, because a couple of people text me and ____ed me off, and they know who they are.
“People close to LeBron James, talking about me questioning him as a father. Come on y’all. I mean, it’s got to a point where this LeBron sensitivity is just beyond the pale.
“You call him the second best player in the history of the game, your insulting him, ‘cos you said he’s not the GOAT.
“You say at age 40 we’ve never seen anybody do what he does, but pointing out at times he may not have hustled back on defense at a key pivotal moment, and that’s a problem. You give him all the key praise in the world when he drops 40, but when he has a bad night you say ‘he has a bad night’, and your hating. It’s ridiculous.
“But never before has it been more ridiculous than it has been right now, because we got to be real about what we’re seeing, when we talk about Bronny James.”
Stephen A. Smith went on to add that he is hopeful Bronny James reaches his potential, and wants the Lakers to simply be patient.
There is a good chance they will be after his performance against the 76ers, which will have taught JJ Redick a lot.
Smith insists his comments come from a well-meaning place, and he simply wants LeBron James to help the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
“What I’m saying is, if you see a son being exposed to things that they may not be ready for, when do you wrap your arms around them, and say, ‘alright now’s not the time.”
