De’Aaron Fox suddenly became the hottest name on the NBA trade market, but the Sacramento Kings need to be incentivized to trade away their best player.
Since Tuesday, fans and experts alike have run amok trying to devise scenarios that would send De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. The Sacramento Kings are reportedly shopping him on the market, but the All-Star guard has a destination in mind, and the Spurs are the frontrunners.
However, the Kings still have Malik Monk, Domantas Sabonis, and DeMar DeRozan on the roster and are not expected to blow it all up and tank. If the Kings do flip Fox ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline, they would likely want to get a win-now package back, and the Spurs are in no position to part ways with established centerpieces.
In order to appease both the Spurs and the Kings, getting a third team involved in a deal makes the most amount of sense, and the two Western Conference teams could turn to an in-conference rival to help facilitate.
The 3-team deal includes Spurs, Kings, and Trail Blazers
If the Spurs don’t want to part ways with established core players like Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Stephon Castle, then they will not only have to break the bank but incentivize a tanking team to get involved as well.
With a litany of draft picks, the Spurs could make an offer with the rebuilding Portland Trail Blazers to facilitate a deal. If the Blazers receive a fair offer, they could be encouraged enough to part ways with some of their better players.

Spurs receive: De’Aaron Fox, Robert Williams III
Kings receive: Anfernee Simons, Tre Jones, 2025 first-round pick (via SAS), 2025 first-round pick (via CHI, protected 1-10), 2027 first-round pick (via ATL), 2031 first-round pick (via MIN)
Trail Blazers receive: Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, Colby Jones, 2027 first-round pick (via SAS), 2029 first-round pick (via SAS)
The Spurs gave up a whopping six picks for Fox and Williams III, who would become the regular backup center behind Victor Wembanyama. However, it allows them to keep their entire young core intact.
Why everyone would agree to this deal
The Spurs could offer fewer picks by agreeing to part ways with either Castle, Sochan, or Vassell, so fans can mix and match those players as they see fit, but all three seem to have budding chemistry with Wembanyama, so the Spurs are incentivized to keep them.
The Kings, meanwhile, get a depth piece in Jones and a solid starter in Simons to play alongside their core of stars, keeping them afloat in the playoff race while adding up to four picks in future drafts.
Portland, on the other hand, offloads two of their larger contracts and gets two moveable pieces in Jones and Johnson.
On top of that, they get unprotected picks each for Williams III and Simons, which should be their asking price anyway. Collins isn’t exactly a premier asset, as he is in the midst of the worst season of his career, but the money has to match and for two picks, the tanking Blazers should be happy with the reunion.
