Team Rentarou’s opponents from Jurassic High are a colorful and serious bunch (and judging from their ears they might be 100% human?), while the three Kaykay sisters who agreed to fill the open three spots all got sick at once (the fact their eyes are almost always closed like Mei’s explains why they didn’t fall in love with Rentarou). Fortunately, Jurassic’s tiny ancient manager allows the use of subs in the form of Hahari, Mei, and Kurumi.
With the all-Rentarou girlfriend team finalized, all that’s left is to play the game. Iku takes the mound in the top of the first and pitches lights-out, but the hulking opposing pitcher Terano has a cannon that breaks aluminum bats and causes foul tips that her battery-mate Rapko always catches. Not only that, Iku seems oddly hesitant to swing at the first two pitches.
The third pitch is Terrano’s “Full Burst” Cannon, which hurts Iku’s arm so she’s unable to continue pitching. Nano relieves her, but Jurassic scores six runs in the middle innings. Worse still, Nano’s replacement at 2B, Shizuka, falls victim to Rapko’s verbal abuse, telling her she’s making the most mistakes and letting everyone down. With the team down 9-0 and three outs from being mercied, Shizuka returns to the dugout in tears.
When the others learn that Shizuka was being bullied by Rapko, a switch flips in all of their heads, including Rentarou’s, and the team finds a new gear. Karane is the first to bat after this, and is the first to finally get a hit, channeling her immense strength to launch a “Murder Meteor” (this episode is rife with shounen tropes like the naming of moves).
When the Jurassic girls wonder just what the heck is going on, all of Rentarou Family sans Shizuka show off their new Super Saiyan glowing golden hair a la Dragon Ball, which is a sensational visual.
They start eating away at the Dino-girls’ lead, with even Shizuka delivering an extremely unorthodox bunt and then managing to reach first base safely thanks to the first baseman believing she resembles her recently deceased little dog Chii-chan. She can’t see through her tears and fails to catch the ball.
With the score 9-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, it all comes down to Iku, and Rentarou asks her why she seems so hesitant to hit. She tells him that one day in the past she hit a home run that hit and bloodied a girl who was watching. Needless to say it’s a horrible, traumatic memory she hasn’t been able to shake.
But thanks to her fellow girlfriends cheering her on and Rentarou promising to catch her homer no matter what, Iku smashes Terano’s second Full Burst Cannon of the day and hits the slam that wins the game, 10-9.
The force of the pitch tears all of her clothes away, while the force of her homer tears Rentarou’s away. Iku doesn’t seem to care about the fact they’re both half-naked, as she rushes to beyond the outfield to embrace Rentarou, thank him, give him a passionate kiss, and tell him she loves him, flashing her biggest, cutest smile yet. The Rentarou and Jurassic teams reconcile over barbecue, with Rapko apologizing to Shizuka and offering her grilled meat.
While I’m not really a fan of anime that are about nothing but baseball, I’m always up for the occasional baseball-themed episode like this one. And while it definitely took some liberties with regard to rules and physics, I’ve seen still weirder and more unhinged anime baseball games. This one struck a good balance of being recognizable as baseball and serving as a vehicle for the Rentarou family to hunker down, support one another, and show what they’re made of. In short…it was a home run.
