Jayson Tatum has been the talk of the town recently across the NBA.
The Boston Celtics superstar didn’t hide his true feelings with regards to the ongoing discussion about who is the future face of the NBA. According to Jayson Tatum himself, he should be wearing the crown as he believes he can simply “check off the boxes” for the criteria.
It comes after calls for Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama to be regarded as the face of the league. Tatum meanwhile feels that he is being overlooked and underappreciated. Even a rival coach thinks the same way.
Tatum stands convinced that he has what it takes to follow the footsteps of those who have carried the torch, with greats like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry entering their latter years.
Paul Pierce thinks being in Boston affects Jayson Tatum’s case to be considered the future face of the NBA
NBA fans and pundits have offered diverse reactions about Tatum’s case for himself about being the future face of the league. But in the eyes of Paul Pierce, there may be little Tatum can do to change opinion.
In the latest episode of his KG Certified with Kevin Garnett, Pierce argued that being in Boston serves as the focal reason for Tatum being dismissed in the future face of the NBA conversation.
“He plays for Boston. It’s just what it is,” the Hall of Famer argued. “Every player through Boston, even Larry Bird, was under appreciated. You know what I’m saying? Because at one point he was the best player in the league.
“But it was always Magic, even though Magic my favorite player, it’s just playing for Boston. Boston is the most hated franchise, hated team in all the sports, in all the basketball for sure.”
Pierce agrees Tatum has the credentials: “Like the guy has been the six Conference Finals bro in eight years. In eight years, two finals. Like, if you match that up with like, KDs and all the stars, they didn’t do that.
“Even like what Luka [Doncic] has been to one Finals, two Conference Finals.”
Pierce believes Tatum is the wing version of Tim Duncan
Tatum’s overall resumé speaks for itself. At age 26, he’s already an NBA champion, six-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA member, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. As noted by Pierce, his collective winning has been there too, since being drafted the No. 3 overall pick of the 2018 Draft.
For how he generates minimal noise despite being decorated already, Pierce compared Tatum to notable silent legend: San Antonio Spurs icon Tim Duncan.
“He just don’t get his due. I said last year he’s the best American player,” Pierce added. “I still think that.
“It’s just, I don’t know, maybe because he’s not flamboyant and he’s private, and he don’t talk [expletive], or he’s not demonstrative out there. I don’t know.
“He don’t bring attention to himself and that’s why people gravitate to him like Ja [Morant] or Anthony Edwards because he is more like the wing Tim Duncan.
“You know what I’m saying, that’s just what it is.”
Tatum put up 46 points last night for the Celtics in their loss to the Cavaliers, showing his individual quality once again.
