Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has paid tribute to Dalton Knecht for his professionalism.
The past month has been a whirlwind for Dalton Knecht. The first round draft pick was traded to the Charlotte Hornets, before being sent back after Mark Williams failed a medical.
Knecht is back on the LA Lakers, but the new new look has him on the outside looking in, rather than playing a major role.
After the Lakers win over the Timberwolves, both former Robert Horry and James Worthy expressed disappointment Knecht was not being given more run, and called for coach JJ Redick to get Knecht more involved.
In the first of two games before the Clippers, Redick did not exactly listen.
JJ Redick told Dalton Knecht to be prepared to sit
In a video circulated by the team’s Instagram channel following the 106-102 win for the LA Lakers over the LA Clippers, JJ Redick had told Dalton Knecht to be prepared to stay seated on the bench.
These plans were forced to change when Austin Reaves was forced out of the game with an injury, having played only nine minutes.
With Rui Hachimura already missing through injury, Redick had to adjust on the fly, and in came Dalton Knecht.
Redick paid tribute to Knecht, speaking in the locker room post-game, hailing his professionalism.
The coach said: “I’ll tell you what: I told Dalton before the game that he probably wasn’t going to be in the rotation tonight, but to be ready.
“That’s a professional basketball player. You were huge, Dalton. Huge.”
Dalton Knecht just wants to play basketball
Dalton Knecht played 18 minutes during the Lakers win, their fifth victory in a row. This was the highest amount of minutes the rookie has been since he was traded.
He scored eight points, 2-3 from three point range, also contributing 1 rebound and 1 assist during the win.
This was a real team performance, and while Knecht was told to be ready not to play, he stayed prepared, and took advantage, impressing his coach.
Speaking after the failed trade, Knecht made clear he just wants to play basketball, with his preference on the Lakers.
He will hope this can be a turning point, with JJ Redick impressed, and praising him in front of the rest of the locker room and coaching staff. He will take confidence.
But it was not a great sign for Knecht’s long-term future that he was told to be prepared to sit, just a month after being traded.
