"Do not look away." A24 has revealed the first official trailer for The Zone of Interest, the acclaimed new film from British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer (of Sexy Beast, Birth, and Under the Skin previously). This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and it was expected to win the Palme d'Or, though it ended up taking home the second place prize Grand Prix just behind Anatomy of a Fall. Though initially adapted from Martin Amis' novel of the same name, the film has a different focus. It's about the Nazi commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his family who live in a nice home just outside the walls of this horrible concentration camp during WWII. Starring Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller, Freya Kreutzkam, Max Beck, Imogen Kogge, and Ralph Herforth. "What I'm looking for are *stars*!" Leonine Studios has revealed a trailer for a German movie called Girl You Know It's True, about the infamous duo known as Milli Vanilli, referencing one of their biggest tracks. Paramount+ is also releasing their own official Milli Vanilli doc this fall - it's streaming next week on their platform (in the US only). This movie is a fictionalized biopic version of their story. Dancers Pilatus & Morvan rise to fame in the late 80s and become stars with No.1 hits, even winning a Grammy. However, the duo never sang a word in their songs, always lip syncing. When the truth is finally revealed, they stare into the abyss while the world witnesses one of the biggest scandals in music history. Time to meet "The G". An early teaser trailer has debuted for an indie film titled The G, the second feature film made by filmmaker Karl R. Hearne. It was just announced as a world premiere in the main competition at the upcoming 2023 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) this November. A mysterious older woman seeks revenge on the corrupt legal guardian who destroyed her life, by putting her in a prison-like "eldercare facility" and stealing everything from her. Described as a "winter-noir" based on real events / inspired by the filmmaker's own family experience. The G is an original portrait of a fierce older woman in the kind of role that a woman is rarely cast in. "More terrifying, more gruesome, all in color." Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new 2023 trailer for their spin-off Halloween "Special Presentation" event called Werewolf by Night. It initially debuted last year during October as a one-off, one-hour-long B&W horror film from Marvel, directed by famed composer Michael Giacchino. It's now being re-released fully in color in 2023 (as "Werewolf by Night in Color"). The special stars the wonderfully talented actor Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a lycanthrope superhero who fights crime using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline. The great cast also includes Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant, & Kirk R. Thatcher. The film introduces a whole bunch of new monsters from the Marvel universe, most notably the big lovable tree monster "Man-Thing" aka "Ted". I thought it played just fine in B&W last year, but I guess I'll watch it again in color this year. At least they're successfully turning watching this movie into a October rewatch tradition. "The dumber I behave, the richer I get." Ain't that the truth. MGM Studios has revealed an official trailer for the film American Fiction, the highly acclaimed featured directorial debut of writer Cord Jefferson. The film won the "People's Choice Award" at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last month, which is a very major prize that usually indicates that the film will end up with a Best Picture nomination. It's now set for release in December in select theaters at first, with stops at AFI Fest + Denver Film Festival. Author Thelonious "Monk" Ellison is peeved because his latest offering hasn't caught fire with publishers, while a tome called We's Lives in Da Ghetto by Sintara Golden hits the bestseller lists, leaving Monk seething. It's a critical, satirical commentary on our culture's obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. "You'd better not let him catch you." Film Movement has revealed an official US trailer for a Tunisian indie drama titled Under the Fig Trees, made by documentary filmmaker Erige Sehiri as her first narrative feature. This initially premiered way back during the 2021 Venice Film Festival, and it is finally getting a proper art house release in the US this fall. It also toured to other fests, including at the Munich, Melbourne, Reykjavik, London, and Toronto Film Festivals in 2022. Set over the course of a single day, and with a cast made up of an ensemble of non-professional actors, Under the Fig Trees is "an elegant, understated tapestry of complex interactions" and "pleasurable, immersive experience" that ultimately reveals the ways in which sisterhood itself becomes an act of resistance. "I had a dream about that girl again!!" Netflix has debuted their bubbly official trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, an animated version of the beloved Scott Pilgrim comic book series. Creator Bryan Lee O'Malley is back working on this show, with his distinct visual style coming to life on the screen as an anime series. Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated. From the low-budget company behind the B-movie Firenado and this year's Mary Had a Little Lamb, comes another bonkers WTF creation that makes you wonder how this sh&! even gets made.
