"What if this awesome thing we have going on gets ruined?" Peacock has debuted the official trailer for an original romantic comedy film titled If You Were the Last, directed by Kristian Mercado from a script by Angela Bourassa. This sci-fi rom-com with a simple twist is about two people stuck on a spaceship out in the solar system questioning their relationship and sex and everything else. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, but is skipping theaters entirely for the release. Adrift in their broken-down space shuttle with little hope of rescue, two astronauts argue over whether they're better off spending their remaining days as friends or something more. Starring Anthony Mackie as Adam & Zoe Chao as Jane, with a small cast including Natalie Morales, Geoff Stults, Missi Pyle, Sarah Voigt, and Kaleka. This looks super cute and quaint and funky, with some stop-motion papier-mâché planets as the backdrop to their situation. Another film wondering: can best friends also be lovers? Will it work? Ahhh yes, the eternally mysterious questions about life and love. There's no easy way to answer these ruminations, which is why we tell stories. This is why we make films, sing songs, read books, to spend time with stories that help us figure out our own ways, help us figure out how (or at least guide us) to make sense of the lives we're all living. That is the best intro I can muster for this charming indie romantic comedy discovery. Molli and Max in the Future is a sci-fi romance film written and directed by filmmaker Michael Lukk Litwak as his feature debut, and I fell head over heels for it. The film first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, stopping at the London & Sitges Film Festivals this fall. I'm glad I took the chance to catch up with it ...

"Who do you think you're working with, buddy?" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller from Mexico titled I Don't Expect Anyone to Believe Me, which sounds much more like a film for a sci-fi or supernatural horror than a drama like this. It's the latest film from the acclaimed filmmaker Fernando Frias of the sensational Mexican drama I'm No Longer Here from a few years ago (which is also on Netflix to watch). In this film, Juan Pablo Villalobos travels with his girlfriend to study for a PhD in Literature in Barcelona. But before he leaves Mexico, he gets involved in a criminal network, which inspires him to write the novel of his dreams (called "I Don't Expect Anyone to Believe Me"), while his life takes many absurd & sinister turns. Based on the novel by Juan Pablo Villalobos, this stars Darío Yazbek with Natalia Solián, Alexis Ayala, Juan Minujín, Carmen Beato, Anna Castillo, Ivano Palatucci, & Antonia Robolini.
