Classic Trailer Rewatch: Tim Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks!’ Sci-Fi Comedy
"They blew up Congress! Haha!" Do you remember this one? Or do you remember not going to see this one? Back in '96, one of the hotly anticipated movies of the year was Tim Burton's wacky sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks! He'd just directed Ed Wood before and everyone was waiting to see him take that zaniness and make his own alien comedy, opening in December before the holidays. But perhaps he went a bit too zany? Because this one bombed and most people hated it. The film is a parody of other sci-fi B movies. Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable ghastly weapons and a cruel sense of humor. Produced & directed by Tim Burton, but not written by him. Starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, and Danny DeVito, among others. The filmmakers hired ILM to create the Martians using computer animation after their previous plan to use stop motion, supervised by Barry Purves, fell through because of budgeting issues. Even these trailers aren't that exciting, an early ...

New Trailer for Tom Tykwer’s ‘Run Lola Run’ 4K Re-Release This Year
"Every second of every day you make a choice that can change your life." Sony Classics posted an updated 2024 official trailer for the 4K re-release of this German classic Run Lola Run, which originally debuted in 1998 some 26 years ago. Anyone who loves cinema already knows and has seen this movie, and it's still as thrilling & exciting to watch today as it was back then. It played at Sundance 1999 (and won the Audience Award there) and also screened at the 1998 Venice & Toronto Film Festivals. After her boyfriend botches a money handover, Lola has 20 minutes to bring 100,000 DM to him or he robs a store. If the money is not returned, there will be consequences. We see three possible scenarios, depending on Lola's encounters. She races through the streets of Berlin to find the money and bring it to him on the other side of the city before it's too late. Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtru star in Tykwer's kinetic Berlin thriller. While the film initially premiered 26 years ago, they're celebrating the ...
‘The Marvels’ Set Disney Back How Much?
Disney couldn’t be happier that 2023 is in the rearview mirror. The year saw the mega studio cut thousands of jobs and memory hole original shows like “Willow.” The company’s streaming service struggled for profitably, and the year paved the way for a public defeat at the hands of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The documentary …

Review: David Leitch’s ‘The Fall Guy’ is a Stunt-Filled Blast and a Half
Making movies these days seems even more challenging than ever. Throwing tons of money at and/or hiring the most famous actors doesn't automatically make a movie good. It doesn't even mean that the movie will be (financially) successful anymore. One of the greatest challenges of successful filmmaking is balancing all of the artistic elements in just the right way - it has to have a great script, actors with the right chemistry not to meniton strong performances, striking visuals, the right pacing, everything else. This isn't easy to pull off. Sometimes a filmmaker does get it just right and it makes for blissful entertainment. The Fall Guy is one of those movies. I am so glad that it lives up to its potential, to all the early hype, and lives up to the concept itself - which is meant to shine light on all of the behind-the-scenes stuntman / stuntwoman work that goes into making action movies. Even though this is technically a remake / movie version of the 1980s TV series of the same name, it feels like a ...
