Watch: ‘Cosmohedron’ – Interconnected Psychotropic Animated Short

How interconnected is everything? From atoms and cells and tiny molecules to galaxies and black holes - it's all connected through space and time and relativity. This overwhelming concept explored in this amusing, psychedelic, mind-melting animated short film. Cosmohedron is created by the Boston-based animator / illustrator Duncan Hatch, who is known for this very hallucinogenic style. There's not much of an intro to it because not much needs to be said: "A surreal journey through the interconnections between all things." Including aliens and other weird creatures, not just humans! Just as Christopher Nolan wrote into the Tenet script: "Don't try to understand it, just feel it." Indeed. That's the best way to watch this one. I'm a big fan of these kind of mesmerizing, trippy animated creations and enjoy featuring them in our Short Film section. I appreciate how many weird characters are in this, I'd happily spend more time hanging out with all of them. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this short available. Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for You Can't Run Forever, an intense survival thriller set in the woods. It's directed by a filmmaker named Michelle Schumacher, who just so happens to be J.K. Simmons' wife, and he also stars in it as well. It's a family affair! This spine-tingling thriller will be released on VOD and in theaters this May if anyone wants to catch it. A teenage girl suffering from anxiety due to a tragic event from her past finds herself hunted through the woods by a sociopath on a murderous rampage. In a harrowing hunt through the woods, Miranda finds strength she never knew she had as she tries to elude her serial killer follower. Starring J.K. Available Now – Incredible ‘A Thousand Suns’ Sci-Fi Anthology Series

"Don't be afraid. I'm not here to take you... You can help me. And I can help you." It's time to discover new worlds. Time to explore unique galaxies and strange planets. A Thousand Suns is the latest creation from a filmmaker known as "Macgregor", produced by a company called Blackmilk Studio. The sci-fi anthology series set in the distant future has launched online - all six episodes (to start) are available on YouTube for free. Macgregor says his team of filmmakers, including Ruairi Robinson & Tyson Wade Johnston, worked to craft "films that serve as a gateway to our hopes, dreams... and nightmares." We posted a trailer last week, and now the first round of films are out. This is similar to Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios or the Love Death + Robots series on Netflix, featuring fresh ideas brought vividly to life in films that are under 10 minutes. So far I'm astonished by how good all six of these look. Incredible work! Their website even has a total of 22 episodes listed but the rest aren't available yet ...

"You should come to my show." Music Box Films has unveiled the official trailer for a Canadian indie drama titled Solo, the latest creation from Quebecois filmmaker Sophie Dupuis. This is currently set to open in US theaters starting this May, after originally premiering at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. It also showed at the Oslo/Fusion International Film Festival last fall and a few other fests. An electrifying love story quickly develops when a rising star in the Montreal drag queen scene meets his club's newest performer, but how long can the couple sustain an artistic double act when the solo spotlight beckons? Featuring a star-making performance by Théodore Pellerin along with Félix Maritaud. "Beautifully charting the highs and lows of falling in love and finding oneself in one's art, writer and director Sophie Dupuis' Solo is a passionate feat of character-driven storytelling and visual extravagance, celebrating the drag world in all its splendor and heartache." Also stars Alice Moreault & Anne-Marie Cadieux. Looks exquisitely beautiful! Take a peek. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sophie Dupuis' Solo, direct ...

Review: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ is an Exercise in Narrative Emptiness

"What kind of American are you? You don't know?" Now that it's playing in theaters, Civil War is one of these movies where everyone must have a very strong Opinion™ about and make sure everyone else hears it. Every moviegoer just HAS to chime in and join the discussion. So here I am throwing my hat into the ring, so to say, with my own critical thoughts. Does it matter? Will anyone care? I doubt it, but of course I've got something to say about this movie. We all do. I'm joining the chorus in continuing to emphasize that I really believe Civil War is an empty movie and that's not a good thing. Aside from the apolitical narrative of "we're going to follow these supposedly objective war photographers" there's really nothing else new or interesting or unique it's saying about war. It is just another bland war movie, regurgitating every last war movie trope but setting in America this time. Thus the pertinent question becomes, "why?" Why set it in America? What is it saying about America's might-really-happen next ...

Animated Musical ‘Thelma the Unicorn’ Trailer feat. Brittany Howard

"You're like a fluffy piece of cotton candy with legs!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Thelma the Unicorn, an animated musical comedy from filmmakers Jared Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos) & Lynn Wang. Made by Mikros Animation and Netflix Animation, along with Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, Scholastic Entertainment. Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. In a moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and she instantly rises to global stardom, but this new life of fame comes at a cost. This animated comedy stars singer / songwriter Brittany Howard as the voice of Thelma, along with Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder. This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies, with singing animals competing in competitions. Though I do like the plot in this being inspired by being fake (on social media) and how she must learn to be her real self. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jared Hess & ...
