Nissan<\/a> is reportedly in talks to invest $400 million (\u00a3316m) in ailing electric car<\/a> start-up Fisker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fisker yesterday announced it has\u00a0paused development of its affordable compact EV, the Pear<\/a>, having made a loss\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>$463.6m\u00a0(\u00a3366m) during the fourth quarter of 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

CEO and founder Henrik Fisker added that the company was seeking a collaboration with another car firm to generate cash or reduce costs.<\/p>\n

He said:\u00a0\u201cFisker is in negotiations with a large auto maker for a potential transaction which could include an investment in Fisker, joint development of one or more electric vehicle platforms and North America manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bloomberg<\/a> and Reuters<\/a> have now reported that the manufacturer in question is Nissan, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n

Reuters added that the talks concern a $400m\u00a0cash injection from Nissan, in exchange for access to the platform underpinning the Fisker Alaska pick-up truck<\/a>. Nissan would also produce the Alaska at one of its\u00a0US-based factories, alongside its own model built on the same architecture.<\/p>\n

\"Fisker<\/p>\n

Fisker chief financial officer Geeta Gupta-Fisker said on Thursday’s earnings call\u00a0that continued development of the Alaska\u00a0depended on a successful tie-up with an unnamed car firm.<\/p>\n

Henrik Fisker\u00a0<\/span>previously said\u00a0that the “large auto maker”\u00a0the company\u00a0was in talks with was not contract manufacturer Foxconn<\/a>,\u00a0with which Fisker has previously negotiated about manufacturing cars in North America together.<\/p>\n

The negotiation effectively ended Fisker’s\u00a0relationship with Foxconn<\/span>, said Henrik Fisker.<\/p>\n

The company is currently focusing its remaining cash reserves on ramping up production of the Ocean SUV<\/a>, which is being built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Austria, as well as rolling out further software updates for the car, he added.<\/p>\n

It produced 10,193 Oceans and delivered 4929 across 12 countries\u00a0in 2023, and expects to deliver\u00a0between 20,000 and 22,000 in 2024.\u00a0The company sold 144 Oceans in the UK in January.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not planning to start external expenditure on our next projects until we have a strategic OEM [manufacturer]\u00a0partnership in place,” said\u00a0Henrik Fisker<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Work continues\u00a0on the Fisker Alaska\u00a0electric pick-up truck, but Gupta-Fisker said its development depends on the successful tie-up with the car maker.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny programmes which are beyond the Ocean would only incur expenses if there’s a strategic collaboration,” she said.<\/p>\n

Pear prototypes were planned to hit the road later this year, ahead of the first customer cars being handed over at the \u201cvery end\u201d of 2025, Fisker said earlier this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
