If I wasn\u2019t the age I am, I wouldn\u2019t believe that the group ABBA has been around for over five decades.\u00a0 Their music was a big part of the soundtrack of my youth. \u00a0April 1999 saw the creation of \u201cMama Mia!,\u201d a show that incorporated the group\u2019s music.\u00a0 Like the band itself, the show became a global phenomenon, currently touring the country in a 25th<\/sup> Anniversary production, opening tonight in Kansas City.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n I had the opportunity to speak with actress Jaclynn Steele, who plays Tanya in the show, during a break in her busy schedule.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MICHAEL SMITH:\u00a0 Good morning.\u00a0 What city am I catching you in?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JALYNN STEELE:\u00a0 Good morning.\u00a0 We\u2019re in Indianapolis through Sunday.\u00a0 Thankfully the sunshine has followed us.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 How did you come to be cast as Tanya in the show?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of a full circle moment for me now.\u00a0 Down the street from where we are is a place called Beef and Boards Dinner Theater.\u00a0 Several years ago, I want to say 2017, they did a production of \u201cMama Mia!\u201d and I played Tanya.\u00a0 Then last year they started holding auditions for the 25th<\/sup> Anniversary Tour.\u00a0 I auditioned but I didn\u2019t expect anything to come of it.\u00a0 I went through all of the levels of the audition \u2013 singing, dancing \u2013 and they liked me! (laughs).\u00a0 Two months later, here we are.\u00a0 (NOTE:\u00a0 For our Indianapolis readers, \u201cBeautiful: The Carole King Musical\u201d will be playing at Beef and Boards through the end of March).<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Were you an ABBA fan?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 I actually was.\u00a0 Riding with my dad on car trips, we would listen to \u201cMama Mia,\u201d \u201cDancing Queen\u201d and, my favorite as a child, \u201cFernando.\u201d\u00a0 It was such a fun song.\u00a0 My dad used to play it for me all the time.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 What made you want to pursue acting?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 That started when I was a child.\u00a0 I loved singing.\u00a0 I grew up in my dad\u2019s church, singing in the choir.\u00a0 I loved singing at school.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until high school that I started getting involved with theater.\u00a0 Doing things after school and really getting serious about it.\u00a0 When it came time to plan my college career I had no idea what I wanted to do\u2026what I wanted to be at that age. Then, my dad said to me, \u201cIf someone came and woke you up at three in the morning what would you have no problem doing?\u201d \u00a0And I thought, \u201cwell, I can entertain.\u201d\u00a0 So that was the decision maker.\u00a0 I ended up going to Sam Houston State University, and auditioned for the musical theater program there, majoring in that with a dance emphasis because my dancing wasn\u2019t so great.\u00a0 (laughs)\u00a0 I figured if I emphasized it, it would get a little better.\u00a0 I did that and then I was a part of the show \u201cFosse.\u201d\u00a0 I auditioned for the show \u201cFosse\u201d in New York and was able to get that.\u00a0 When I finished the tour I went back to school because my folks spent a lot of money (laughs).\u00a0 I finished my degree and moved to New York.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 OK, I have to interrupt here.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re being modest.\u00a0 You just said, I couldn\u2019t dance but I got cast in \u201cFosse.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s like me saying, \u201cI really can\u2019t sing but I\u2019m playing Jean Valjean in \u201cLes Miz.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 (laughing)\u00a0 The years of training in school actually helped out.\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t get official dance training until later in life.\u00a0 And then when I did, like I said, I emphasized it, because I really wanted to get that.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Is there a role out there you\u2019d like to play someday?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 I don\u2019t really have one.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a favorite where I\u2019m thinking, \u201coh, I\u2019ve gotta play that.\u201d\u00a0 Whatever role I have, I\u2019m going to do the very best I can to make that role my own and to create that character.\u00a0 Whatever that character may be\u2026even if it\u2019s \u201c3rd<\/sup> tree on the left.\u201d\u00a0 (laughs)\u00a0 You never know what wonderful cast members you might meet and how you might influence each other\u2019s lives.\u00a0 It\u2019s all in the moment and being a part of the cast.\u00a0 And the cast I\u2019m a part of now is spectacular.\u00a0 It\u2019s a really diverse company and everyone is wonderful.\u00a0 We get along very well.\u00a0 Which is very rare.\u00a0 (laughs)\u00a0 My fellow Dynamos \u2013 Christine Sherrill and Carly Sakolove \u2013 we really share a special bond.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot of fun and it\u2019s a wonderful cast.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Do you find the audience singing along a lot?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 Oh yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the reason why we have the Mega-mix at the end.\u00a0 So that everybody can have fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Do you have anything lined up after this show?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n JS:\u00a0 Right now I\u2019m concentrating on the
