For the first time in the Rennsport Reunion\u2019s three-year history, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) invited Porsche Centers from across the United States to compete in a 2023 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. The category winners have since been announced.<\/p>\n

Judging of the three categories, Preservation, Restoration, and Individualization, took place during Rennsport Reunion 7 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, which ran from September 28 through October 1. Previously, entries from the East, South-Central, and West were judged at their corresponding central events. The area winners were then put on display during Rennsport Reunion 7 where the final winners were selected, including a crowd-sourced \u201cPeople\u2019s Choice\u201d award.<\/p>\n

“Sharing this year’s Restoration Challenge finalists at Rennsport Reunion 7 has provided an exhilarating platform, not only for Porsche Classic but for our Porsche Center finalists to share their cars and passion,” said Jonathan Sieber, Senior Manager of Porsche Classic. “Seeing the crowd’s reaction to the amazing craftsmanship is a joy.”<\/p>\n

The Restoration Challenge encompasses cars built in the 1950s through the 2000s that are due for expert attention from Porsche-trained technicians. Around 70 vehicles entered the contest. The following winners were determined by a panel of panel of experts from Porsche Club of America and PCNA:<\/p>\n

Individualization winner: Beverly Hills Porsche, 1991 911 Carrera 4 Coupe<\/h3>\n

Beverly Hills Porsche built this 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 to cater toward driving enthusiasts in Southern California to enjoy daily, in the way the Porsche Sonderwunsch (special wishes) program would. It was upgraded with the best Porsche Genuine Parts of the \u201890s to provide modern day performance teamed with comfort and safety without losing the classic Porsche character. The engine was brought back to new condition and the cylinders were bored out from 3.6 to 3.8 liters, with upgraded pistons and cylinder barrels. Improvements didn\u2019t stop there: racing springs and upgraded valves were installed and the cylinder heads were modified to receive new gaskets. The original dual mass flywheel was replaced with a single mass flywheel and a GT3 high-performance oil pump was incorporated. Any hardware and brackets were coated with cadmium for corrosion resistance. Speed Yellow accents were added throughout, including the tachometer which features the Porsche 75th Anniversary logo.<\/p>\n

Restoration winner: Napleton Westmont Porsche, 1994 911 Turbo 3.6 Type 964<\/h3>\n

Porsche Classic Partner, Napleton Westmont Porsche, chose a 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 for the competition. The entire car was stripped down to bare metal and every inch was re-worked, including precisely gapping the body lines and applying three coats of Porsche black paint and finishing it with three coats of clear. The dazzling finish took weeks of wet sanding and polishing before the car went through final assembly. Once the interior was finished with new carpeting and reupholstered seats, the car was ready for its national debut at Rennsport.<\/p>\n

Preservation winner and People\u2019s Choice Award: Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas, 1996 911 Turbo Type 993<\/h3>\n

Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas located this 1996 911 Turbo Type 993, which hadn\u2019t ran for at least 8 years. It received a full mechanical overhaul, with the brake calipers and intercooler colors painted back to factory form. The aged M030 shocks were swapped for Porsche’s newly engineered and Nurburgring tested Bilstein M030 setup. The car came with an aftermarket stereo system, which was replaced with a factory-spec Porsche Classic Radio. The team even fully restored the cracked steering wheel with specially optioned rootwood components, along with the shifter, brake handle, and the original carpet and upholstery. The Speed Yellow paint was recovered from its cloudy weather damager with wet sanding and polishing and now sports a brilliant mirror finish.<\/p>\n\n
