They\u2019re basically unguardable. They\u2019re the most talented team in the NBA and the favorites to win it all.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fIygMP\">There\u2019s just one slight but significant problem. When the game is on the line, and the Celtics have the ball, they have an unhealthy tendency to find Jayson Tatum and watch as he takes a contested fadeaway jumper. <\/p>\n<p id=\"V9VzZU\">That\u2019s partially on Tatum, partially on his teammates and partially on Joe Mazzulla and the coaching staff. It\u2019s a rectifiable issue, and the final hurdle to clear as they pursue a championship. <\/p>\n<div id=\"QAL2vj\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Joe Mazzulla gives his reaction to final seconds of Celtics&#8217; loss to Cavaliers&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OA2FOaqe8c\">pic.twitter.com\/OA2FOaqe8c<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Celtics on NBC Sports Boston (@NBCSCeltics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCSCeltics\/status\/1765216233236934930?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2024<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"NkbuyJ\">As John Tomase of NBC Sports Boston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsboston.com\/nba\/boston-celtics\/breaking-down-celtics-last-second-shots-reveals-one-clear-issue\/592827\/\">astutely notes<\/a>, Tatum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24091984\/jayson-tatum-reflects-last-possession-boston-celtics-cleveland-cavaliers-joe-mazzulla\">last-second miss<\/a> against the Cavaliers on Tuesday is far from the first instance this season. <\/p>\n<p id=\"6PE60G\">In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsboston.com\/nba\/boston-celtics\/breaking-down-celtics-last-second-shots-reveals-one-clear-issue\/592827\/\">it\u2019s happened<\/a> against the Pistons, Timberwolves and Nuggets. Ball to Tatum, everyone clears out, fadeaway, miss. <\/p>\n<p id=\"tlugbd\">\u201cI just tried to get a clean look,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24091984\/jayson-tatum-reflects-last-possession-boston-celtics-cleveland-cavaliers-joe-mazzulla\">Tatum told reporters Tuesday night.<\/a> \u201cIn hindsight, I probably should have went a little bit earlier to give us more time and another opportunity.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside id=\"jN53eA\">\n<div data-anthem-component=\"readmore\" data-anthem-component-data='{\"stories\":[{\"title\":\"Jayson Tatum should not have taken the last shot against the Cavs\",\"url\":\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24092482\/jayson-tatum-should-not-have-taken-last-shot-against-cleveland-cavaliers-boston-celtics-joe-mazzulla\"}]}'><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p id=\"rwwoYp\">Conceptually, it makes sense. Find your best player, exploit a perceived mismatch and let him go to work. In reality, it\u2019s not the answer \u2013 particularly with so much talent around him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ctjPaW\">Brian Barrett of The Ringer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/itsbrianbarrett\/status\/1765387996524642578\">pointed out<\/a> that Tatum has by far the lowest shooting percentage (32.6) in clutch time among the starters. He\u2019s having an MVP-caliber season and is indisputably the best player on the best team. Tatum, his teammates and the Celtics simply need to figure out a better way to give the team a better chance to succeed. It\u2019s about the situation, not the player.<\/p>\n<p id=\"xMQOD4\">The irony of it is that the Celtics are moving the ball extraordinarily well the bulk of the game. They consistently turn down good shots for great ones and make one another better. Then that often disappears in the final seconds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"jTkyZp\">\u201cOf course everybody is ready to make a play at the end,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/03\/06\/sports\/celtics-cavaliers-22-point-lead\/\">Kristaps Porzingis told reporters.<\/a> \u201cWe trust JT and we live and die by those last possessions, last shots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"k0ffvC\">It\u2019s nice that he has his teammate\u2019s back, but the reality is that the Celtics are dying more than they\u2019re living in that scenario. Well, there are a few possibilities. One idea is to have Porzingis set Tatum a ball screen. That puts the defense in a tricky spot, as the defender has to worry about both options and everyone around them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cNETSh\">Another is to give the ball to Jrue Holiday or Derrick White and let Tatum and Jaylen Brown work off the ball. If the right play is to shoot, Holiday or White will do so. If Tatum or Brown finds some daylight, they\u2019ll get them the ball. Set screens away from the ball, pass and cut, master the fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"SOTAx8\">But perhaps most important of all is to simply play with pace and get into the action early. They tend to let the clock run nearly all the way down before Tatum makes his move. Run your offense, move the ball and find an opening.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Xp2SMS\">It\u2019s not a question of talent; it\u2019s just about trusting what works in other situations and applying it in the clutch. Keep it simple.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2xI8EU\">\u201cWe just got to get into it faster, go faster,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/3\/6\/24091984\/jayson-tatum-reflects-last-possession-boston-celtics-cleveland-cavaliers-joe-mazzulla\">Mazzulla told reporters.<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"AyIsac\">He\u2019s identified part of the problem.
