Rapid expansion in the electric motor (e-motor) market is on the
\nhorizon, driven by the eAxle market and evolving technologies. As
\noriginal equipment manufacturers increasingly keep design in-house
\nbut outsource production, which players stand to gain?<\/p>\n

S&amp;P Global Mobility forecasts a fourfold increase in the
\ne-motor market in the next 12 years, with expected production of
\nover 120 million motors by 2034. The eAxle market is set to drive
\nthis growth, with its motor production share projected to increase
\nfrom 38% in 2023 to 69% in 2034.<\/p>\n

Emerging technologies such as eBeam are gaining attention. This
\ntechnology will likely be driven by the North American pickup
\nmarket's loading\/towing needs; additionally, it could potentially
\ngrow in the European van market and the pickup and van markets in
\nGreater China.<\/p>\n

Hairpin winding technology is also on the rise due to its
\nefficiency and power density, despite its intricate manufacturing
\nprocess. It is anticipated to become the preferred choice for eAxle
\nmotors, with substantial growth in Europe and North America in the
\ncoming years.<\/p>\n

While rare earth-based magnet technology currently dominates,
\nexploration of alternatives is underway to reduce this dependence.
\nFor instance, employing non-rare earth-based motors in secondary
\ne-Axles, especially for 4-wheel-drive electric vehicles, could
\nreduce the market share of motors needing rare earth elements from
\n78% to 60%.<\/p>\n

Make versus buy<\/strong><\/p>\n

OEMs are increasingly relying on in-house manufacturing and
\ncontinuous research and development to enhance e-motor
\ntechnologies, reduce costs and improve product development time.
\nWhile we project the majority of eAxle system integration to stay
\nin-house until 2030, a new trend is emerging. OEMs are keeping
\ndesign in-house but are outsourcing the production of motors or
\ntheir subcomponents.<\/p>\n

This is achieved through strategic sourcing or alliances\/joint
\nventures. This approach is evident in Japan and Korea, with South
\nAsia and Europe likely to adopt this trend by 2035. North America,
\nhowever, is projected to maintain its focus on in-house
\nsourcing.<\/p>\n

Global investments and key players<\/strong><\/p>\n

The e-motor market has seen global investments, with a boost in
\nNorth America following the announcement of the Inflation Reduction
\nAct. From 2023 to 2030, domestic OEMs such as Ford and General
\nMotors (GM), alongside Asia-Pacific-based suppliers such as Aisin,
\nHitachi, Hyundai Mobis and JingJin Electric, should lead the
\nincrease in motor production.<\/p>\n

In-house production of e-drive components is a major focus for
\nGM and Mercedes-Benz, both investing heavily and planning to expand
\ntheir factory capacities. Similarly, Hyundai and
\nRenault-Nissan-Mitsubishi are shifting more toward in-house e-motor
\nproduction, reflecting the industry's emphasis on cost optimization
\nand maintaining supply chain resilience.<\/p>\n

Dynamic sourcing strategies present opportunities for
\nsuppliers<\/strong><\/p>\n

As motor design becomes more of an OEM responsibility and
\nproduction volumes rise, the potential for outsourcing
\nsubcomponents grows. This leads to evolving dynamics in the motor
\nsupply and presents opportunities for tier 1 and 2 suppliers,
\nespecially in the production of rotors and stators.<\/p>\n

With companies like BorgWarner<\/strong><\/a>, ZF<\/strong><\/a> and Magna<\/strong><\/a> already bagging deals to supply e-motor
\ncomponents, and the rise in EV popularity, the production volume of
\ne-motors is set to increase. This growth opens doors for suppliers
\nto expand into the motor subcomponents market, offering
\nopportunities to supply individual rotor and stator components to
\nOEMs.<\/p>\n
