T<\/span><\/span>here\u2019s a reason why the NCAA Tournament <\/span><\/span>draws so many eyes in March. It\u2019s the only <\/span><\/span>place you can see Fairleigh Dickinson \u2014 a <\/span><\/span>university I would have bet you made up before I <\/span><\/span>heard about them a couple of weeks ago \u2014 bring <\/span><\/span>down Purdue, a mighty member of the Big 10 con<\/span><\/span>ference. College basketball is incredibly entertaining <\/span><\/span>and brings people together around the country and <\/span><\/span>even the world. I love how the sport is now, but it <\/span><\/span>could be better. Here are three things that could <\/span><\/span>easily be implemented to vastly improve the game.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Adopt the Elam Ending<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s time to get rid of late game fouling. It\u2019s chop<\/span><\/span>– <\/span><\/span>py, it slows down the pace of the game and it\u2019s a <\/span><\/span>completely different type of basketball than what\u2019s <\/span><\/span>played throughout the game. The solution is the <\/span><\/span>way scoring worked when we played basketball <\/span><\/span>on the blacktop behind school growing up \u2014 set a <\/span><\/span>target score.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My proposal is to adopt the Elam Ending. Basically, <\/span><\/span>during the under four minute media timeout, the <\/span><\/span>target score is set at seven points higher than the <\/span><\/span>leading team\u2019s score. The game clock would turn off <\/span><\/span>and the teams would play until one of them hit that <\/span><\/span>score or surpassed it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This target score ending has already been utilized <\/span><\/span>in the NBA All-Star Game, overtime in the NBA G <\/span><\/span>League and The Basketball Tournament.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Under the Elam Ending, defenders could focus on <\/span><\/span>trying to force turnovers and playing the same solid <\/span><\/span>defense they practice instead of rushing over to tap <\/span><\/span>someone on a full-court press.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, this would eliminate some hostilities <\/span><\/span>where players would get upset about a team scoring <\/span><\/span>late when they\u2019re up because of the shot clock. <\/span><\/span>Instead, the offense still needs to score to reach the <\/span><\/span>target score to win.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One concern under this system was the scenario <\/span><\/span>where defenses would foul in the bonus when the <\/span><\/span>offense needed a 3-pointer to win and the defense <\/span><\/span>was within a basket. The Basketball Tournament <\/span><\/span>resolved this by giving offenses one free throw and <\/span><\/span>possession when a defender committed a non-shoot<\/span><\/span>ing foul in the Elam Ending when the team was in <\/span><\/span>the bonus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Allow Redshirts to Play in 10 Games<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In college football, student-athletes are allowed <\/span><\/span>to play four games or roughly a third of the season <\/span><\/span>while keeping their redshirt intact so they don\u2019t uti<\/span><\/span>lize one of their years of eligibility. I think a similar <\/span><\/span>rule for college basketball should be instituted, espe<\/span><\/span>cially because the roster size is smaller.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no reason why these young athletes <\/span><\/span>shouldn\u2019t be allowed to get some experience in gar<\/span><\/span>bage time or step up when a teammate is injured. <\/span><\/span>Let them play a third of the season, roughly 10 <\/span><\/span>games. Think about how much Isaac Johnson and <\/span><\/span>Mason Falslev could have helped USU at certain <\/span><\/span>moments this season.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. Changes in Eligibility<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ken Pomeroy, the inventor of KenPom metrics, <\/span><\/span>has argued a few times this season that the NCAA <\/span><\/span>should keep five years of eligibility for student-ath<\/span><\/span>letes, a temporary change meant to provide an extra <\/span><\/span>opportunity for athletes who played during the <\/span><\/span>canceled\/altered coronavirus seasons.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, renewing my call to make 5-year eligibility <\/span><\/span>permanent,\u201d Pomeroy tweeted on March 15. \u201cMore <\/span><\/span>talent to go around this season = more parity than <\/span><\/span>ever = best product ever. 2P% and FT% at historic <\/span><\/span>highs, TO% at historic lows. Room for sensation<\/span><\/span>al freshmen and old talented dudes. Do the right <\/span><\/span>thing, NCAA.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I agree. Beyond the talent on the court, allowing <\/span><\/span>student-athletes to get a master\u2019s degree paid for by <\/span><\/span>a scholarship would keep up with degree inflation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the NCAA has announced they are <\/span><\/span>making changes to the waivers they issue to trans<\/span><\/span>fers. They say a coaching change is no longer a valid <\/span><\/span>reason for a waiver to allow a transfer immediate <\/span><\/span>eligibility on their second transfer. That is unfair to <\/span><\/span>the student-athlete. They were sold a pitch from a <\/span><\/span>coach about their program, which has significantly <\/span><\/span>changed because they will have a new coach. Allow<\/span><\/span>ing those two-time transfers gives student-athletes <\/span><\/span>a bit of power in a system that uses their talents for <\/span><\/span>massive TV revenues for their school, conference <\/span><\/span>and the NCAA.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
